I'm curious too if this is Gakyeong's father. I don't think the flashback would have included him if he wasn't important in the story.

I have this theory too. And Shin Taejin is probably Gakyung's real father so she's not actually of half-Japanese blood.

I think the rumor of her being of mixed race only started when her mother married Shinichi and Gakyung's aunt despised her for it, unbeknownst to them that her mom was actually a freedom fighter spy.

The drama's main theme is about deception and hiding one's real identities, so if you'd notice I think the writer is putting a lot of emphasis on 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘀 as a mean to unearth all these deceptions and unmasked one's true self:

eg Soran's family photo with her daughter (which will reveal Soran's real identity and her connection to the Jeamni massacre),

and now, probably Gakyung's family photo too (which will reveal her connection with Hideo/Taewoong)
