Seven Ways to Guard Your Eyes and Ears

INTRODUCTION: GATES TO THE SOUL UNDER SIEGE

Brother, the world’s gotten louder, dirtier, and dumber since you looked away last week. You blinked, and Hollywood dropped two more perverted films. You sneezed, and TikTok vomited ten thousand brain-frying trends. While Christians are out here trying to stay right with God, the devil’s running an open sewer into your skull through your eyes and ears—and if you’re not guarding the gates, you’re already a casualty.

You’ve heard it said that the eyes are the windows to the soul—but that’s not KJV Bible talk. That’s dime-store psychology. What God DOES say is this: “Mine eye affecteth mine heart” (Lamentations 3:51). And He didn’t stutter. What you SEE affects how you FEEL, and how you FEEL affects how you LIVE.

The same goes double for your ears. Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17), so what happens when fools and devils do all the talking? You stop having FAITH and start hearing FILTH.

So here are seven ways—straight from the war room—to protect your soul’s front lines: your eyes and ears.

1. Recognize the Battle for What It Is

You’re not in a world that’s indifferent to the gospel—you’re in a world that hates the gospel. This is wartime, not vacation.

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes…” (1 John 2:16). Notice what the Holy Spirit said. The eyes are the very fist of the flesh, reaching out to grab what God told you not to touch.

Don’t spiritualize this away. The devil doesn’t show up in red pajamas with a pitchfork. He shows up in your Netflix queue. He shows up on your Instagram feed. He shows up with “updates” and “trending videos” until, eventually, you just “get used to it.”

The first guardrail is awareness. Wipe the gummy sheep-sleep out of your eyes and admit it: there’s a sniper sighted in on your eyeballs. Every movie commercial, every raunchy meme, every TikTok dance—those bullets ain’t blanks.

The war is real. Open your Bible and look around; we’re not marching to “Onward, Christian Vacationers.” It’s Onward, Christian Soldiers.

2. Install a Filter — On Your Mind

People act like the solution is software. “Just install Covenant Eyes and you’ll be good.” WRONG. How about you install Philippians 4:8 in your head first?

“…whatsoever things are true…honest…just…pure…lovely…of good report… if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

Say it with me: The first filter is BIBLICAL, not DIGITAL.

If the Bible’s not guarding your MIND, the software ain’t guarding your HEART. You can’t software your way out of sin. The devil’s done figured out how to get around your firewall. But he still can’t crawl past a saint on his knees.

So start filtering your thinking. When evil flashes before your face, your reflex should be: “Nope! Not pure, not lovely… I’m out.”

That’s not repression. That’s obedience.

3. Break the Power of “Harmless” Entertainment

You don’t go blind from staring at the sun for 5 seconds—you get cataracts from a LIFETIME of careless glances. Same with sin. It’s the slow drip that kills.

Christians today love the word “harmless.” “It’s just a show.” “It’s just a game.” “It’s just a song.” Sure—just like Delilah was just a girlfriend. And you remember how that turned out for Samson.

You cannot keep letting filth through your eye and ear gates and then act surprised when your spiritual strength is shaved off in the night.

There’s no such thing as “just a little” poison. The devil knows that, even if you don’t.

Break the power of “harmless.” Be suspicious of anything that doesn’t love your Savior back. Music, movies, sports, memes—if Jesus Christ can’t sit next to you and enjoy it, you shouldn’t either.

That’s not legalism—that’s loyalty.

4. Practice Spiritual Fasting from Media
