On the other side of the coin, many took advantage of the train behind such movements as #metoo and #BlackLivesMatter and allowed the attention from viewers to overshadow the meaning in the driving force behind the reach of social media. #smsc2019
Specific movements such as #Metoo gave women and victims the voice to speak out on their experiences without fear of ridicule of judgement on such a sensitive topic. #smsc2019
The issue behind not having a credible leader behind a movement, the strength of the message may lose its value. Without having a sound individual to deliver the message, it can be seen as noise and dilute the meaning behind what is being said #smsc2019
Social media gives life to this idea of "civil unrest" because it provides protesters with a platform that does not require a leader or patron. Merely just sharing the value behind the ideals each individual stands for #smsc2019
We live in such a progressive modern age society right? Well I kinda beg to differ world! Check out my own little piece of mind on the issue of gender equality. #smsc2019

I think in our current climate we often misuse or take for granted the meaning of language. A friend ca be groomed by the construct of mutual affection. But these loose connections and interactions seen across socials, in my opinion could never be a bond. #smsc2019
Social media disrupts the term “friend” because of how loosely it can be used. Having a friend online can be so similar to a “IRL (in real life) friend”, however, it can also be very different. Historically, the term “friend” is someone who you share a mutual affection #smsc2019
Twitter does create this diary like way of bringing together people. The casual, yet authentic way of sharing what aligns with you. And if it aligns with Tom, Sarah and Jim..We begin to build this narrative that we understand each other like a friend IRL. #smsc2019
4. How does social media disrupt the term “friend” as we have historically understood it?
A friend historically had to be someone you had personal ties to, but in the realm of social media...A friend can be a distant connection that you find over a common hashtag. #smsc2019
There is a slippery slope of sharing. With platforms like Instagram, in most cases they only want you to display the glamorous side to the story and withhold the extra parts. Of course to bring in brand deals and money. But that doesn't exactly scream authenticity #smsc2019
I think we are also in this culture of "oversharing" information. YouTube and other platforms give us the ability to make people's lives accessible. From relationship goals to regular coming of age journeys, we see it all if someone is willing to share. #smsc2019
@kerriann_ring @TatyannaCarman This performance enhancing quality is extremely relevant to Instagram as many just put forth a front to obtain the follows or results they desire.
@TatyannaCarman I agree that Instagram promotes performance. So many people that I follow (myself included) enhance their pictures and videos with filters. It’s not always a bad thing, but users will probably say they feel the pressure to edit their content before posting. #smsc2019
A great example of this can be through the article we read in class about Feminist Online Identity. This article states people, specifically feminists have used Twitter as a platform to provide opportunities for women to define their actions through a virtual community #smsc2019
Platforms such as Instagram and Twitter gives us the opportunity to share what we desire through this idea of mixing the public and private into our performances of being online, but do they encourage us to be our "authentic selves?" #smsc2019
Question # 2. Social media is the stage in which influencers and actives use to construct and display this "storytelling of the self." It encourages users to promote what they wish to tell the world. #smsc2019
