Don’t confuse the subject of a joke with the target of a joke.

It’s a point that Ricky Gervais makes, usually about people confusing his parody of ignorant attitudes with him actually having those attitudes.

Whether we like Gervais’ humour or not, it’s a legitimate argument in defence of dark humour.

…which brings me to those shark memes.

I haven’t shared any of those jokes, but I can explain them anyway for people - especially in the russian “opposition” - who pretend not to understand them.

The target of the joke is the fact that imperial genocide is taking place and that it’s based on outrageous lies.

The shark incident became an opportunity for dark humour in which the justification for that genocide could be parodied. “Well, the sea is a shark’s historical sphere of influence.”

Now, it’s possible that the person attacked by the shark was a campaigner against russian imperialism who donates lots of his time and money to helping Ukraine win in order to rectify the horrors being done by his country in his name. Possible. Not likely.

But… Stay focused. Because the joke is not about him, remember. It’s about genocide. And it’s taunting people to reveal whether they are more outraged by genocide or some dark humour parodying it. Of course, russian “opposition” voices will never resist that bait.

I’ll be honest. I never connected the shark (or dolphin?) inflatable at the NAFO summit with those shark memes as the whole thing was ‘Crimea beach party’ themed, which is a separate joke.

Maybe I’m dumb. Or maybe not recognising and trying to police dumb jokes represents a functioning sense of perspective amidst a genocide.

I still haven’t bothered to ask if that was the intended reference. Because again, functioning sense of perspective. If your country is committing genocide then you also shouldn’t have the time or energy to get outraged by this.

Dark humour is very widely used in all societies. Look at Gervais’ career, for example. It should go without saying that people facing genocide also have the right to use it when mocking genocide.

Stop policing people’s anger about genocide.
