Louis Vuitton has turned a traditional Kurdish shepherd’s garment into high fashion.

The distinctive felted outer garment, traditionally made and worn by Kurdish shepherds to protect against the harsh mountain climate, appears remarkably close to the garment presented in Louis Vuitton’s Fall/Winter 2026 collection.

Yet there is no acknowledgment of its Kurdish origins.

Why should a garment developed and preserved by Kurdish communities be presented as a luxury-fashion creation without crediting the culture it comes from?

While Turkic ancestors were still nomadic on the Asian steppes, Kurdish roots were already being carved into stone in Anatolia. These 3,400-year-old Luwian hieroglyphs from Anatolia, reveal a direct linguistic link to modern Kurdish. A century-old state name of Turkey cannot overwrite the indigenous history of Anatolia and Mesopotamia.
