“When you face the PMF, you're facing the entire Iraqi establishment, Iraqi government, Iraqi state that they have overwhelmed. At the same time, you're facing the Iranian establishment, plus the universe of the Islamic resistance that they have created.”—Dr. @Dlawer Ala’Aldeen.
“Kurdistan Region has been a small fish in a big tank, where the big whales are fighting. I think the KRI has chosen the right thing, and it's trying its best not to be entangled,” says @MERI_info President, Dr. @Dlawer Ala’Aldeen.

Let's clear up the misinformation campaign by a selected few in Baghdad and on social media who are unable to defend the folly of the Iraqi government’s fiscal policies and management of this crisis.
The obvious first: we want to help Baghdad maximise oil production and exports on one hand, and maximise trade on the other, especially during these extraordinary circumstances. Contrary to the reports online, the KRG has not put forward a series of demands.
There's been one, consistent request: lift the trade embargo on the Kurdistan Region imposed since January 1st. Why is this important? Well, as a result of this embargo, formal trade into the region has been wiped out - zero bank transfers for imports in a moment when everything should be done to maximise trade. Informal trade has picked up significantly, forcing importers to pay up to 15% premium on dollars from the local market across Iraq, and increasing commodity prices, including food prices for all Iraqis. The KRG's local (non-oil) revenues have dropped significantly, undermining our ability to raise the prerequisite monthly payments to Baghdad for payroll payments.
In a bid to end this years-long stalemate, Prime Minister @masrourbarzani wrote to Prime Minister @mohamedshia outlining a path forward over customs in the interest of national unity and the extraordinary circumstances the country faces. In it, he proposed that:
1). KRG adopts federal tariffs in all border crossings and airports.
2). KRG implements its own ASYCUDA customs management system administered by the KRG Ministry of Finance and Economy, with the data owned and hosted by the KRGwith real-time data-sharing with the federal government. Our assessment is that this can be completed by the end of this year.
3). Until then, the KRG would bring on an external auditor to VERIFY that a) all federal tariffs are accurately implemented, and b) all USD FX are tied to CLEARED imported goods. This would address Baghdad's concerns over revenue leakages and @cbiraq's need to verify dollar transfers abroad against imported goods into the country.
We met with the Iraqi team on Thursday in a bid to reach a deal. They insisted that all imports into KRI must go through the federal ASYCUDA system, with all custom revenue deposited directly into federal coffers — a clear violation of the current arrangement and our constitutional rights.
We reiterated then, as we did publicly today: the KRG will unity tariffs and implement ASYCUDA but needs time to do so. Until then, there really isn't any other way. Iraq has lost all routes to the market - for exports and imports. It makes sense for the country to lift this embargo, increase trade and restore formal banking trades until the customs system is implemented in all KRI borders and airports.
We hope that pragmatism emerges in Baghdad. We want a deal. We want to see exports go through the pipeline to bring immediate relief and liquidity to the country as a whole. We are in this chapter together.
Lift the embargo.
Today, @SenBlumenthal and I introduced the Save the Kurds Act.
I believe that there is strong bipartisan support for the idea of protecting the Kurds in Syria and beyond because they have been such a reliable ally to the United States. The SDF – with a large Kurdish element – took the brunt of the fight to defeat ISIS in President Trump’s first term.
I realize Syria is complicated culturally, ethnically and politically. However, attacking the Kurds greatly diminishes the United States’ standing and will hinder Syria’s ability to grow as a country.
To those countries or groups who believe it is open season on the Kurds in Syria without consequence, you will be sadly mistaken.

There is strong and growing bipartisan interest in the U.S. Senate regarding the deteriorating situation in Syria. There is strong consensus that we must protect the Kurds who were there for us in destroying the ISIS caliphate, as well as many other groups.
The powers of the Senate are real. Stay tuned.
This is the struggle of General Mazloum Abdi (Şahin Cilo), following in the footsteps of the leader Masoud Barzani just as Masoud Barzani said one day to the American High Commissioner to Iraq, Paul Bremer, in 2003, when they asked him to hand over the Peshmerga during the settlement period, he said: "Come and dismantle the Peshmerga if you can."
Likewise, General Mazloum Abdi said to Terrorist Al-Julani in front of Thomas Barrack. Their faces turned pale. They offered him the position of Minister of Defense, after canceling all his options for a peaceful solution. He said clearly: "I will return to Rojava. I will return to my people in Rojava. We will declare war to defend ourselves, a general mobilization. I will die with honor, as I was ready to sacrifice and to be martyred in Kobanî. We will return to Rojava, fight with honor, and die with honor. I will not sell my land, my people, or my dignity."
This is how heroes are when they are tested, history tests them
From now on that there is no such thing as the SDF; it is called the Kurdistani Rojava Forces, under the leadership of General Şahin Cilo
Those same Kurds stood on the frontlines and played a decisive role in defeating ISIS, defending not only our people but global security. What is happening today is not only an attack on the Autonomous Administration of Rojava, but an assault on Kurdish dignity everywhere. Kurdish solidarity remains our true guarantee, and we will continue to support our people in Rojava to restore stability and secure their rights within a permanent constitutional framework in Syria.
The Kurdish people do not ask the world for protection; we just remind them of history. This is not the first time support has been given to those who opposed the Kurds—only for the world to later realize the harm done. The Ba’athist regime was once supported against the Kurds; the Kurds endured, while the Ba’ath left behind tragedy and crime.
