Had a great time participating in this panel discussion with leading experts on mass timber building fire safety. Thank you to @tomcopley for hosting an important and thought-provoking event!
The @MayorofLondon has used his powers to ensure standards of fire safety in new buildings in London are higher than the rest of the country.
Today I hosted City Hall’s housing delivery partners and experts to discuss how timber can be used in buildings safely and sustainably.
The term firewave describes multiple urban wildfires triggered by extended periods of hot, dry weather.

3/6 Through several EU-funded projects, Prof. @GuillermoRein explores how to mitigate the risk of fire by exploring its behaviour in urban and natural environments.
Dear Sir Anthony @AnthonyHopkins,
My name is Guillermo Rein, professor from Imperial College London, UK. Although we have not met, I have long admired your work and the positive influence you have had on so many people around the world.
I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of your Pacific Palisades home in the recent wildfires. Your resilience and the heartfelt message you shared, “the only thing we take with us is the love we give”, were moving and inspiring.
I am writing to ask whether you would consider supporting an international initiative to establish the 8th of October as Fire Safety Day. This effort, developed in collaboration with the United Nations and other international organisations, aims to raise awareness and promote action on fire safety worldwide.
With best regards,
Guillermo,
I am starting a collection of battery fire safety signs from around the world. This one is from Switzerland. Do you have one to share?

I am proud to see our facade fire research being recognised with the best paper award by SFPE.
The project was led by Matt and I at Imperial, in collaboration with Wojciech at ITB.
Initiated and completed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the project tackled a key question in fire safety: why are there so many national standards for testing the flammability of building façades? A great way to celebrate the team’s hard work.
Prof Whelton and the engineering students from Purdue University brought so much joy, energy, generosity, knowledge and discussion to Imperial today. Thank yoy. Boiler Up!
Tomorrow I am sharing research with MPs and other amazing researchers at the UK House of Commons at the @STEM4Brit competition!
I'll be sharing the research of @ImperialHazelab, Arup, and CERIB on fire behaviour in large modern mass timber buildings! 🔥

The LA wildfires are almost fully contained after rainfall over the weekend.
But Imperial Professor @GuillermoRein, a world-leading expert in urban fires, says the danger is far from over...

We spent some time at Imperial’s fire lab today with different media crews talking about wildfires and our research. We showed them our wildfire demo with thin dead fuels (aka excelsior). In this video, which fuel is wet and which one is dry?

Excellent presentation by Jamie John (@ImperialHazelab) @UKWildfire2024 #wildfire2024 on the 2022 London wildfires and the role of VPD. Pre print here.

Since everyone is in Barcellona having a great time and my FOMO is at level high, and since my online presence is very limited these days, I decided to make a comeback!!
I realized I had not shared this picture, taken during IAFSS23 in Japan. With so many amazing people 😍
Great start to the #ESFSS2024 with introduction and welcome from Prof Planas to the beautiful campus of Barcelona East School of Engineering (EEBE) in Barcelona, and with a fantastic plenary by Prof @rorymiles on fire spread!
