@drumm_colin do you think the predilection for 'a singular origin of money' view is influenced by how the concept of money today combines some of these different lineages? (kinda thinking about the relation to the classical functions attributed to it: means of exchange, unit of account etc)

getting back to reading and I need to say I kinda admire hobsbawm's writing because although he is more of a generalist in the book I'm reading (the age of revolutions) he always provides particular examples (and counter-examples) to his generalizations

I think what made me perceive this was the contrast with the other book about 17th century europe (and french revolution, enlightenment etc) I'm also reading, which doesn't provide any examples or specifications to its assertions

@drumm_colin as a guy who comes from the field of history it pains me to see how common it is to both use the authority of thinkers from long ago to present ready-made solutions to problems their thought is incapable of dealing with & to abstract contingencies whenever it's easier to do so.
