Music is spiritual—at least in the Christian context, it is.

Paul identified a category of Christian music called spiritual songs.

This presupposes that such songs have their origin and essence in the spiritual realm rather than the physical world.

More generally, music is spiritual in the sense that it has spiritual effects.

In the New Testament, Paul instructed Christians to minister to one another through songs and psalms.

Surprisingly, in both Ephesians 5 and Colossians 3, where he prescribed music, he was teaching about sanctification and the perseverance of the saints:

Colossians 3:16

"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

Ephesians 5:19

"Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"

However, if you read the opening verses of each chapter—which I believe serve as the thesis statements—

you’ll notice Paul’s emphasis on sanctification and perseverance:

Colossians 3:1-2

"If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."

Ephesians 5:1-2

"Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour."

Paul considered music spiritually significant enough to affect both sanctification and perseverance.

Furthermore, we have an entire book of the Bible made almost entirely of songs—the Psalms.

But there is something peculiar about it: it wasn’t just a collection of songs.

The apostles later affirmed that the Holy Spirit spoke through its central contributor, David:

Mark 12:36

"For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool."

Acts 1:16

"Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus."

Acts 4:25 (KJV)

"Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?"

David was singing, but it was the Holy Spirit harmonizing spiritual melodies through his mouth.

Music can be spiritual. In the Christian context, it certainly is.

In the worldly context, it is equally spiritual—but in an entirely different way.

Since Satan mimics what God does, I believe he also inspires songs.

And I am not surprised. Virtually all mainstream secular songs revolve around the three principal sins:

Lust of the flesh
Lust of the eyes
Pride of life

This is my submission on the spirituality of music.

According to the Bible, songs are spiritual.

Perhaps one of the greatest problems of the Christian in the modern world is self sufficiency. Anyone who will be much for God must be much with God. Our lives laid down on the alter is what it cost to do the will of God. It is a life of utter death to self. Wherever you find that the faith is not as alive and potent, it is because men are not dying in the place of prayer.
