Friedrich Merz did not mean to drag German pupils off their screens and into politics. The government managed it anyway. Not with a new Abitur rule. With talk of war.

About 45,000 people turned out at more than a hundred anti-war rallies across the country. It is the fourth nationwide wave of this size. That is no longer a local hobby.

The demands are blunt: no militarization, no return of universal service, no extra military role for Germany in Europe. Signs read “Russia is not our enemy.” The mood is simpler still. People are tired of living inside a permanent briefing about a war that is said to be inevitable.

History came with them. Two world wars. An eastern front. Fear, rearmament, then the new normal. Youth made the school strike the symbol. Older marchers said they were there so their children never see a trench.

Weapons firms and the parties tied to them gain from the scare. The bill, if the scare becomes policy, lands on everyone else. Not all of Germany is buying the script.
