Before he became a billionaire, John Paul DeJoria’s wife left him with their toddler and a note: she couldn’t handle being a mother anymore.
In the video below, founder of biggest tequila brand recalls finding his son and becoming homeless.
He was 22. His son was two and a half.
DeJoria says his wife had stopped paying the rent without telling him, emptied their small bank account and taken their only car. Soon, he and his son were evicted.
He borrowed an old Cadillac with a broken water pump. It became their home. To buy food, he collected empty bottles and returned them for a few cents each.
He admits that pride made things worse. He didn’t want to tell his family how badly he needed help.
A friend eventually offered them a room and helped him get back on his feet.
In 1980, DeJoria and hairdresser Paul Mitchell started a company with $700 between them. He later co-founded Patrón, which Bacardi acquired in a deal valuing the business at $5.1 billion.
But in this interview, he remembers standing in front of his little boy with no money and no idea how he would feed him.
What kind of mother leaves her toddler behind with a note, and is there any explanation you could accept?
A South Texas rancher lost his son in a street fight in 1884, and his revenge was to pay a railroad to go around the town.
Helena was the seat of Karnes County, sitting on the old Chihuahua Road, and it had a reputation.
The local specialty was a knife fight with the two men's left wrists tied together, which tells you most of what you need to know about the place.
In 1884, Emmett Butler, son of the cattleman William Butler, was shot and killed there. Nobody was ever convicted.
Butler was one of the largest landowners in the county, and when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway came surveying, he made an offer: free right of way across his land, on the condition that the tracks miss Helena entirely.
The railroad took the deal. A new town called Karnes City grew up at the depot, and in 1894 it took the county seat.
Helena emptied out within a generation.
The stores closed, the families left, and the square went back to grass and prickly pear. •
The 1873 courthouse is still standing though, restored and open as a museum, which makes Helena one of the few ghost towns in Texas where you can walk up the courthouse steps and go inside.

BREAKING: A jury has found Karmelo Anthony guilty in the murder of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.
Anthony admitted to stabbing Metcalf but claimed he acted in self-defense.
Witnesses testified that Metcalf and other student-athletes repeatedly asked Anthony to leave a Memorial High School team tent during a rain delay at the track meet.
Students said Anthony responded with threats and became increasingly confrontational before a brief physical altercation ended when Metcalf was stabbed in the chest. | @TheStoryFNC@marthamaccallum
The Arcane Texas Fact of the Day: Billy Bob's Texas, the iconic dance hall and "world's largest honkytonk" in Fort Worth, was given its name by Darrell K. Royal, legendary former coach of the Texas Longhorns football team. It's true.
Per Billy Bob Barnett, the founder of Billy Bob's, the original plan was to call it "Jerry Max's Texas," after Jerry Max Lane, a local performer. But when Jerry Max and Billy Bob met in the Stockyards to finalize everything and make the new name legal, Jerry Max brought some lawyers who had all kinds of paperwork they wanted Billy Bob to fill out and sign. “You got to do this, you got to do that, you got to sign this ...” Billy Bob said. “Coach Royal is there because he’s real close to Jerry Max and close with me. We’re sitting there talking. And he says to me, ‘Well, if you called it Billy Bob's Texas, you wouldn't need all these lawyers.’”
And that is why Billy Bob's is called Billy Bob's and not Jerry Max's.

🚨 JUST IN: Iranian refugee woman MIC DROPS the Islamic regime 🫳🏻🎤
"If America's the 'great Satan,' why do you send your OFFSPRING and LOVED ONES here?!"
"You have the same regime officials' children here enjoying what we have in the US, our free dress code, our amazing academic institutions, our basic human rights that their counterparts back in Iran, unfortunately, can't enjoy!" — Dr. Mahsa Tehrani
Truth.
I am sick of serving in Congress with immoral freaks who abuse their office and bring dishonor to the institution. Congress is rotted to the core and it needs a complete overhaul. The American people deserve better than this.
