🇳🇬 He was supposed to be unstoppable. He was 19 years old, a Champions League winner with Ajax, and the captain of Nigeria’s golden Olympic generation.
He had just conquered the world at the Atlanta Olympics, scoring a legendary golden goal against Brazil and leading his country to the most unlikely gold medal in football history.
He was 6ft 5in of pure, effortless grace. A footballer who glided rather than ran, who saw angles no one else could see.
He completed his dream move to Inter Milan. He had the world at his feet.
Then, the world stopped. It was during a routine medical examination with his new club in Milan. The doctors found something unexpected.
A defect in his aortic valve. A congenital heart condition that had been silently threatening his life.
The diagnosis was brutal. The doctors told him he would probably never play football again. Some even whispered that he might not live long enough to see his 21st birthday.
In a single afternoon, the invincible teenager was reduced to a patient. The man who was supposed to conquer Europe was suddenly fighting for his life.
In November 1996, Nwankwo Kanu underwent open-heart surgery in Cleveland, USA, to replace his faulty aortic valve.
He spent 16 months out of the game. Imagine the silence. Imagine the fear. A young man, thousands of miles from home, with a scar down his chest, wondering if he would ever kick a ball again.
Against all odds, he returned to the pitch, pulled on the Nerazzurri shirt, and finally made his debut for Inter Milan, proving the doubters wrong.
He later admitted: "Now I know that being fit and strong doesn't make your heart 100%."
The football world moved on. Inter Milan signed Ronaldo. The headlines moved to the next big thing. Kanu was written off as a tragedy.
But they forgot who he was. In 1999, Arsene Wenger took a gamble. He brought Kanu to Arsenal for a reported £4.15 million.
Many thought Wenger was signing a shadow of a player. A man whose body had betrayed him.
They were wrong. On October 23, 1999, Arsenal were 2-0 down to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with 15 minutes left.
Chelsea had not conceded a single home league goal all season.
Then, Kanu happened. He scored a scrappy goal with 15 minutes to go. He equalised with a sublime turn and shot with eight minutes left.
And then, in the final minute, he danced past a stranded Ed de Goey from an impossible angle to win the game 3-2.
It was a hat-trick that defied belief. It was the moment the world realised that the man with the scarred chest was not just a survivor. He was a miracle.
Kanu went on to win two Premier League titles and two FA Cups with Arsenal. He was part of the legendary 'Invincibles' side that went a whole season unbeaten.
He became a cult hero, not just for his goals, but for his spirit.
But his greatest legacy is not on the pitch. The boy who nearly died on an operating table became the man who saved hundreds of lives. In 2000, he set up the Kanu Heart Foundation.
The foundation has funded life-saving heart operations for over 600 children across Africa.
"As a footballer you win trophies," Kanu said. "But this is so much more."
Nwankwo Kanu was supposed to be a football statistic. A talent lost to a cruel twist of fate, but he became something far greater. He became proof that a broken heart can still beat stronger than anyone ever imagined.

❤️🥹 Fabián Vargas was so devastated after losing 8-0 to Barcelona that he completely forgot he’d asked Messi for jerseys to help flood victims in Colombia. But Messi hadn’t forgotten. He personally collected shirts from his teammates and showed up at Almería’s dressing room to deliver them himself.
🇨🇴 In 2010, Colombia was suffering from devastating floods, and Fabián Vargas, who was playing for Almería, had been asked to donate a jersey for a charity auction to raise money for the victims.
Vargas agreed, but he knew an Almería jersey wouldn’t attract much attention. Since they were facing Barcelona that week, he decided to approach Messi.
🗣️ Fabián Vargas:
“Before going out for the warm-up, I told Messi about the terrible floods in Colombia and asked him for three jerseys: his, Xavi’s and Iniesta’s, because they were the ones who were crushing it at the time.
The match ended, and they beat us 8-0 at home! I was so angry that I completely forgot about the jerseys.
Then our kit man came and told me: ‘Fabi, Messi is at the locker room door.’
I went outside, and there was Messi, standing there in flip-flops, holding a bag full of jerseys.
He told me: ‘Fabi, this is what I was able to get for you. I hope it helps.’
I couldn’t believe it. There were jerseys from Messi, Xavi and Iniesta, but also Puyol, Piqué, Dani Alves, Mascherano, Pinto and another player.
Those jerseys helped raise enough money to support 90 families affected by the floods.
What touched me most wasn’t just the jerseys. It was the fact that Messi personally collected them and came all the way to our dressing-room to deliver them.
Normally, when players exchange jerseys, the kit men handle everything. But Messi took the time to do it himself.
Later, when I got home and looked at the eight jerseys, I started laughing. I thought: ‘Did this guy give me one jersey for every goal they scored against us?’ 😂
I even thought about keeping Messi’s jersey for myself. He was in his prime, the most important player in the world. But I couldn’t. I knew those jerseys were going to help people who needed them.
When we faced each other again in the Copa del Rey, I thanked him.
I told him: ‘Leo, I really want to thank you. It turned out spectacularly. We raised a lot of money and helped 90 families.’
And he simply replied: ‘Well, Fabi, I’m glad they were helpful.’”
🥹 Messi didn’t just give him his own jersey. He went around collecting shirts from his teammates, personally delivered them to the opposition’s dressing room after an 8-0 victory, and helped 90 families affected by devastating floods.
The greatest footballer of all time, but stories like this remind you of the human being behind the legend. ❤️🐐

🚨🔥¡NO MIENTAN!
