Interested in exploring how early-life gut microbes shape growth and development?

Teagasc are recruiting a PhD student to join a Research Ireland Walsh Scholarship-funded project at Teagasc Moorepark (Teagasc Food Research Programme) & School of Microbiology UCC.

Based in the Dr Kanishka Nilaweera Lab with co-supervision by Prof Douwe van SINDEREN & Dr Silvia Melgar, this role will focus on manipulating the genomes of the gut microbiota known to respond to non-native milk ingredients and assess whether these changes influence gut activity and nutrient absorption.

- 4 year, full-time position
- Focus on the role of gut microbiota during the suckling stage of life
- Based at Teagasc Moorepark & University College Cork

We are looking for candidates with a First or 2.1 Honours degree (or Master’s) in Microbiology, Nutrition, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related discipline. The candidate should also be willing to travel between University College Cork and Teagasc Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork to undertake the programme of research

Participants in our ongoing short course continue to strengthen their understanding of pandemic preparedness and response through a One Health perspective.

 Sessions facilitated by Dr. Vida Makundi, Assistant Director of Preventive Services at the Ministry of Health, covered historical and emerging pandemics, drivers of pandemics in Tanzania and Eastern Africa, the role of the private sector, and the importance of surveillance and early warning systems in detecting and responding to public health threats.

The discussions underscored the value of multisectoral collaboration, timely information sharing, and integrated surveillance systems in strengthening health security and building resilient health systems.

 We are encouraged by the active engagement of participants as they develop the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, detect, and respond to future health emergencies.
