Happy #ArborDay! Every tree is important. The Alder trees at Commodore Park don't look like anything special - but they are home to Seattle's largest Great Blue Heron Colony (65 nests this year!) - and a vital part of the ecosystem - an estuary between saltwater and freshwater.
Heron chick(s) have hatched!!! Heard faint chick sounds yesterday. In a few weeks the sounds will get louder + more frequent and the chicks’ heads will appear above the nest rims. The parents brood the chicks for 2-3 weeks as the chicks can’t regulate their own body temperatures.
Save the Date - Sat. Apr 20 for Bird Lovers Day!
The nesting colony of Great Blue Herons at Commodore Park are the iconic bird of the #BallardLocks. We'll have info + activities 9am to 2pm AND scopes at colony from Noon - 2pm. #greatblueherons#birding#seattle#nature#FamilyFun
