At a loss for words on the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Then I watched nearly 200 @FordhamNYC students, many born years later, climb 2,200 stadium steps in honor of the ascent FDNY firefighters undertook that day. They showed up. They remembered. I have hope for this generation.

Listening to Abdul El-Sayed on Face the Nation this morning, it was entirely clear that he is unwilling to distance himself from Hasan Piker’s anti-American bigotry. El-Sayed was given three opportunities to do so and refused each time.

I hate to say it, but Republicans are right to link El-Sayed and Piker. If El-Sayed will not repudiate Piker’s dangerous and toxic views, particularly after the two men so actively collaborated on the campaign, he cannot reasonably complain when voters treat their politics as part of the same platform.

Michigan Democratic voters and the national Democratic Party should make any future support for El-Sayed conditional upon his unequivocally and convincingly condemning and rejecting these toxic, dangerous, bigoted, anti-American views.

9/11 WAS NOT NEW: THE PLOT, THE WARNINGS, AND THE MAN AMERICA LET ESCAPE

❌ In 1993, Ramzi Yousef drove a rental truck packed with explosives into the garage under the World Trade Center. The goal was to drop one tower onto the other. The building stood. Six Americans died. Hundreds were injured. America treated it like a closed criminal case and went back to sleep.

Yousef’s uncle was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - the man the world later called KSM. He was not some villager from a cave.

In the 1980s he came to the United States on a student visa. He learned English at a small Baptist college in North Carolina, then earned a mechanical engineering degree at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro.

As a teenager, he was already in the Muslim Brotherhood! The Brotherhood got him first. America only gave him an engineering degree. The Brotherhood taught the war. He used the degree to build the attack.

❌ In 1995, uncle and nephew ran a second plot from the Philippines. The plan was to hide bombs on about twelve U.S.-bound passenger jets so they would all blow up over the ocean on the same day.

Police found the bomb factory after a fire in a Manila apartment. Yousef was caught. Khalid was not. FBI agents tracked him to Qatar, had a plane waiting, and asked the government to hand him over. Someone inside tipped him. He walked out of a country the size of Rhode Island. The agents who had him in the net watched him vanish.

❌ He did not quit. He upgraded the weapon!

They stopped trying to sneak a bomb onto a plane.
They decided to steal the plane and use the jet itself as the bomb.

Hijack it. Fill it with fuel. Fly it into the tower they failed to knock down in 1993.

Khalid first wanted it even bigger - more jets, both coasts, even a nuclear plant, and one plane landing so he could walk out and give a speech. Bin Laden cut it down to New York and Washington. That smaller version was still 9/11.

❌ That is not a mystery. Not “nobody could have imagined airplanes as weapons.” It was the 1993 truck bomb plus the airline-bomb plot plus a hijacked jet. Same family. Same targets. Same men.

When the second plane hit the second tower, FBI agents who had hunted Yousef and Khalid for years did not wonder who did it. They already knew the name. One of them said it on the phone: “I told you these bastards are coming back.”

Khalid pitched the plan to Osama bin Laden. He recruited the pilots from the Al-Quds Mosque in Hamburg, Germany: Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, Ziad Jarrah.

They shaved, got clean passports, took U.S. visas, and trained in the open at Florida flight schools in Venice. Instructors said Atta was a cold student who only wanted to fly straight and level. Nobody treated that as a weapon.

⚠️ He sent the first two hijackers, Nawaf al-Hazmi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, into San Diego. They used the Islamic Center of San Diego and Masjid Ar-Ribat, where Anwar al-Awlaki was imam. Then they followed Awlaki to Dar al-Hijrah in Falls Church, Virginia. Those mosques are still open today... What are we doing, America!? ⚠️

⁉️ CIA had already watched Hazmi and Mihdhar at an al-Qaeda meeting in Malaysia in January 2000. The two men then flew to Los Angeles on valid visas.

⁉️ The CIA did not put them on the watchlist. FBI agents inside the CIA wrote a cable warning headquarters. It was blocked as “CIA information.”

⁉️ For more than a year, people at the CIA knew two al-Qaeda operatives were inside the United States. The FBI was not told in time.

On August 23, 2001, a routine “find these guys” note finally went out. Last known lead: a New York hotel. Too late. On September 11, both names were on the plane that hit the Pentagon.

October 2000 was another warning. Al-Qaeda blew a hole in the USS Cole in Yemen and killed 17 American sailors. The country still did not go to war footing.

Khalid ran the rest from overseas while American TV spent the summer of 2001 on “shark attacks” - a boy lost an arm on July 4 weekend and the networks treated beaches like the big threat.

CIA was telling the White House bin Laden was determined to strike inside the United States. The President’s August 6 briefing said exactly that. The hijackers were already here buying tickets for Tuesday morning, September 11.

They captured Khalid in Pakistan in 2003. He has sat at Guantanamo ever since. The trial is still not finished. Three thousand people are still dead.

This was not lightning from a clear sky.

It was a warning we already had - and a man we already let go.
