Why do Masons keep their rituals a secret?

For the same reason that the ancient stonemasons kept their trade secrets.

Their secrecy helps maintain a better quality of work.

What are the rules on a handshake after a lodge meeting? Can/do you use one from a degree, if so which one is appropriate, the highest mutual one? Often times after a meeting I have Brothers shake my hand in this way but I always refrain because I thought it wasn’t permitted 🤷‍♂️
