'The shelling of the National Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, and the burning and looting of the National Library of Iraq in 2003 were moments of incalculable loss to the world’s shared cultural heritage – and to the peoples of those countries in particular.'
'Its unique collection of Jewish musical folklore consists of original recordings of folk music from 1912 to 1947 on wax cylinders – and in 1995 this collection was added to UNESCO’s ‘Memory of the World’ register.'
Russians following Stalinist playbook in occupied Ukraine: arrest intellectuals, artists, curators, leaders. Decapitate society. They did it in 1933, they will do it in 2022. History repeats itself
Given the massive profits the energy companies are making, and seeing how France has been able to keep energy inflation to 4% with a windfall tax, its bewildering that Johnson refuses to impose a windfall tax on energy companies to support families.
My God we should be airlifting people out. Instead we are asking people to fill out visa forms and stay in hotels to await the turning of the bureaucratic machine. It’s beyond screwed up - it’s inhumane, appalling, cruel - incomprehensible.
We should be sending planes to Poland & Hungary to collect people. Instead, we're not letting even families of people who live here get in. Poor poor people, having endured the trauma of getting to safety, are not being allowed to look after their own families in their own homes
'Chiqueno began compiling his interviews with the Ayoreo, hunter-gatherers of the Chaco Forest, in 1979, after seeing missionaries using tape recorders to document their experiences. His tapes partially preserve a fast-disappearing culture.'

Our thoughts are with the staff and users of our esteemed counterpart, the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, in Kyiv. The threat you face to life and limb, and to the precious intellectual and cultural heritage in your collections, is an outrage.
Europe was slow: Europeans were not convinced war was real, or that Ukrainians would fight. But it was and they did. Whatever the outcome, I hope we will now have a renewed, changed, American-European partnership, one that will face, realistically, the difficult future together.
It is totally immoral that the Home Office is still applying normal visa restrictions to those fleeing Ukraine.
The Government must urgently provide a simple sanctuary route to the UK for all who need it. This is our moral duty.
In 1941 over 33,000 Ukrainian Jews were murdered in a 2 day span in the Babi Yar ravine marking one of the deadliest massacrers of the Holocaust. For 🇺🇦 to have a Jewish President descended from a Holocaust survivor standing up to a dictator is really empowering.
We say NO to tasking the NATO alliance - but now endorse UK civilians, with no military training, to go and fight in Ukraine!
Please do NOT go if you have no combat experience.
You may get yourself and others who have to look after you, killed.
