Some conversations stay with you — we think this will be one of them. 🌈

@heug This was a fun conversation because it wasn’t just about careers.
It was about purpose, identity, and how to build a path that fits who you’re becoming—not just who you’ve been.
Third, if you are trying to figure out your next step, it often makes more sense to prototype than to plan perfectly. Test ideas. Run small experiments. Learn by doing rather than assuming you can think your way to certainty from the outset.
And fourth, relationships still matter enormously. In many cases, your network will outperform your résumé—not because credentials do not matter, but because trust, context, and human connection still shape opportunity in powerful ways.
The first is that a career is not a race on a narrow track to be won. It is better understood as a series of moves—some deliberate, some exploratory—that help you make progress toward what matters to you.
Second, in a labor market increasingly shaped by AI, titles matter less than understanding the actual “verbs” behind your work. What do you really do? What problems do you solve? What capabilities do you bring? Those questions are becoming more important than the label on your résumé.
Most of us inherited a mental model of careers that no longer fits the world we actually work in.
The old story was straightforward: pick a field, climb the ladder, and keep moving up.
But in my conversation with Alex Green on @HEUG the Mic, we discussed why that framing is breaking down and what might replace it.
A few ideas at the center of the conversation:
