3 months ago, we would have cheered at having even 1 vaccine with an efficacy of 60-70%. We’ve been spoiled by previous 95% efficacy data. A 60-70% efficacious vaccine is a HUGE accomplishment and WILL help in our fight against #COVID19.

@YohannesShife14 @3Sentinel4 @zeynep They describe how they use of age specific IFR in the methods, but they could be much clearer about the #’s. It’s parameter d, they cite Ferguson et al. (ref 12) which estimates IFR to increase w/ age (for 20-30 y/o they est. IFR = ~0.03% and 80+ y/o = ~9.3%). Hope that helps

@YohannesShife14 @3Sentinel4 @zeynep Yes. Both papers are preprints, meaning neither paper has been peer reviewed. That doesn’t invalidate either paper, but it also doesn’t mean one automatically has more merit - both make good points. And yes, they stratify IFR by age (pg 50 in the parameter table + methods)

@YohannesShife14 @3Sentinel4 @zeynep They do stratify IFR by age (pg ~50). Both preprints show prioritizing high risk/older ppl minimizes deaths. This preprint found that when VE > 80% + coverage ~20-30%, prioritizing vax in high-transmission groups (ie 20-50 y/o) would prevent more deaths by slowing the epidemic

@jared_tyndall @S_Gunther @darakass The point is that you should still do all the same things you would normally do to protect yourself and others from COVID: wear masks, social distance, limit gatherings, etc. The same way you wouldn’t stop wearing your seatbelt just because you’ve never been in a car accident.

For those getting tests before Thanksgiving: testing shouldn't give you a false sense of security. It takes 2-14 days after exposure to become infectious. You can test negative in the morning and be highly infectious in the afternoon.
