Even today some Roman roads are still in use....this section of the Stanegate between Newbrough and Vindolanda. A few upgrades over the years though....
Some 40+ years before building of Hadrian's Wall the Romans were already carving up the landscape with the Stanegate. A Road linking Corbridge with Carlisle guarded by six forts. After the withdrawal from Scotland in AD 84 it became Romes northern frontier. Well worth a walk
