For hours wind swept through the forest, carrying the scent of blood with it. I raised the weapon, shivering in my hands as the first Wolf leapt through the treeline.
I put them down one by one, but the shapes moved like quicksilver. My life would buy them time enough to cross.
The metal hissed as it slid into my flesh, steaming against the vein.
“The sedative will help,” she reassured, hands shaking. “You won’t feel much”
The Wolves were coming and I was a weakness to the pack. She slid the revolver into my palm, blood thickening the snow around me.
I listened to the crunch of footsteps as they passed beyond, solemn and dutiful. They had dragged me as far as they could, the howling growing too near. I clenched my fingers around the cold steel, the curve of the trigger. She said her words before moving on, joining the rest.
“The order was given that any soldier who wishes to leave will not be stopped nor dissuaded. At first light, those of us remaining will hold and fight til the last. I pray one day my son will see a world free of this conflict.”

“The Upper Divine is comprised of non-sequential cards bearing symbols of occult meaning, such as The Broken Throne.
The Lower Divine is made up of four suits, numbering I-X: Candles, Blades, Eyes and Stars. Each suit ends with the face cards of Herald, Knight, Priest and Mage.
“The Wandering Divine is arguably the most divisive of the major faiths; it’s followers build no temples nor do they worship any deity.
Their belief is that Fate is writ in the fabric of the world, and that our actions, and by extension the course of our lives are preordained.”
“Cardsinging is an ability granted not by learning, but of birth. These individuals are revered in their communities, but hold no formal positions of power.
The Deck itself is organized by two types of cards, the Upper and Lower Divine, each bearing their own significance.
Known also as storm spiders, they emerge from their cavern nests during the rainfall and stalk the cliff sides. Moving unseen, like water sliding over glass, until their venomed fangs find purchase in some poor creature’s flesh.
Of the many natural dangers posed by the terrain and climate of the Storm’s Path Mountains, it is the creatures that survive in this harsh environment that inspire stories of dread.
At home in the deep, lightless cave systems of the mountains, the glass spiders spin their webs.
Their exoskeletons of near transparent chitin serves as a form of camouflage, making them effective hunters.
While larger game at these higher elevations are rare, it is the luckless explorer or ill-prepared caravan that fall to their predations.
The monks hold no belief in the Eternal Flame, the Twin Gods of the Protectorate, or even the card-reading pagans of the Sovereign Cities. They believe that divinity is carried within each individual, relating to one’s own journey in returning to the Sacred Form, to harmony.
Historians debate the origins of the Stones-of-Summer, monolithic spires of ornately carved rock jutting hundreds of feet high from the ocean floor.
Adherents of the Sacred Forms have made this place their home; networks of ropes allowing the monks to travel between the spires.
It is us, mankind, who has disrupted the shape prescribed for us. Having broken harmony with the rest of creation, we reap the harvest of discord amongst our kin.
They believe the only way to heal this wound is to reconnect with the Sacred Form we cast aside so long ago.
