Tariffs may seem logical in theory: increase the cost of importing goods to encourage companies to bring production back to the U.S. by making domestic manufacturing comparatively cheaper. On paper, that sounds great.

But in practice, companies can simply treat tariffs as a cost of doing business and pass that cost on to consumers. If prices go up across the board, the burden ultimately falls on us. And even if demand shifts to domestic companies, there’s nothing stopping them from raising their prices as well. Increased demand doesn’t guarantee affordability—especially when businesses are incentivized to maximize profit year over year.

We rarely see companies hold prices steady, let alone reduce them, regardless of where they produce. The primary focus of corporate America is consistent growth and increased profit—not consumer benefit. And the problem is, no one is required to comply with the intentions of these tariffs. The policy may aim to boost domestic industry, but without any obligation or accountability, companies are free to act in their own interest.

To make matters worse, the same corporations that once lobbied against tariffs—because they wanted to offshore production and lower their costs—are now perfectly fine with tariffs, not because they believe in bringing jobs back, but because they see them as cover to raise prices. Even companies unaffected by tariffs often increase prices simply because they can get away with it in this environment. It becomes just another way to boost profit margins, while consumers are told it’s all due to “global issues” or “inflation.”

And here’s what really separates the U.S. from other nations: we’re not pairing tariffs with serious subsidies or coordinated investment. Countries like China, the EU, and India don’t just impose tariffs—they also invest in their industries. China subsidizes everything from steel to solar to EVs. The EU pours billions into agriculture, energy transition, and manufacturing. India uses a mix of tariffs and subsidies to grow domestic production in electronics and agriculture. These countries use tariffs as part of a larger strategy. We, on the other hand, often stop at the tariff and hope the free market does the rest.

Tariffs without matching subsidies or policy guardrails don’t build industry—they just tax the public and give companies more pricing power. They may be marketed as pro-worker or pro-America, but without real accountability, they’re just another economic tool that benefits those already in power.

I’m not against making other countries pay what they make us pay—that kind of reciprocity makes sense. But let’s stop pretending this current approach helps the average American. Because right now, it just feels like we’re footing the bill for someone else’s win.
