We don’t need our teachers to be the most dynamic, the most innovative, or the most tech savvy. We need them to care about kids… work well with their colleagues… and come to work every day, excited about making a difference.

I saw this written on my math teachers board this week when I popped into her room. Every day, she asks her students a different question.

What does this have to do with math? NOTHING! But you don’t get to know your students by only talking about math. This fires me up!

I remember asking a 3rd year teacher what she’s learned as a new teacher. Her advice: 1) Pay attention to the needs of your kids… not just the standards. 2) Talk through behavior issues… don’t just assign consequences. 3) Rely on your colleagues. 4) Take things in stride.
