Police investigate found human remains
Police are investigating human remains found in Halifax today.
At approximately 7:55 a.m. today, police responded to a report of human remains located in the area of Long Lake near Old Sambro Road in Halifax. At this time, the remains have not been positively identified.
The investigation is in the early stages and investigators are working with the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s office who will determine the manner and cause of death.
No further information is available at this time, however; there is currently no evidence of foul play.

Police investigate vehicle-pedestrian collision
Police are investigating a vehicle-pedestrian collision that occurred in Halifax yesterday.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., police responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision in the area of Quinpool Road at Quingate Place in Halifax. A vehicle struck a woman crossing the road in a marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian, a 72-year-old woman was transported to the hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle was issued a ticket.
The investigation is ongoing.

Police investigate assault
Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in an assault where hate is believed to be a motivating factor.
On July 4, police received a report of an assault that occurred earlier that day at approximately 1 p.m. at Costco located at 230 Chain Lake Drive in Halifax. It was reported that a man was yelling racially offensive language at a family in the store. The man then approached another customer and assaulted him while continuing to shout racially offensive language.
The suspect is described as a white man, between 30 to 40 years of age and bald. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black t-shirt, jeans and black boots.
Halifax Regional Police’s Hate Crime Unit is involved with the investigation.
Anyone with information on the suspect’s identity or anyone who was targeted by the suspect during the incident at Costco is asked to call police at 902-490-5020. At approximately 5:50 p.m., police responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision in the area of Melwood Avenue and Herring Cove Road in Halifax. A vehicle travelling on Herring Cove Road struck a pedestrian crossing the road. The pedestrian, a 14-year-old youth was transported to the hospital by EHS with what are believed to be serious injuries.

Halifax Regional Police responded to 875 calls for service over the weekend. One notable incident is as follows:
Police lay robbery charges
On July 3 at approximately 2:55 p.m., police responded to a report of a theft that occurred at the Canadian Tire, located at 194 Chain Lake Drive in Halifax. Staff reported two males and a female came into the store and broke into a display case containing BB guns. The two males stole multiple BB guns and all three suspects fled on foot prior to police arrival.
On July 4 at approximately 1:30 p.m., police responded to a weapons incident at the Canadian Tire, located at 30 Lamont Terrace in Dartmouth. Staff reported two males and a female attempted to break into a display case containing BB guns but were unsuccessful. While attempting to flee, the female sprayed a staff member with a sensory irritant before exiting the store. Officers quickly located and arrested all three suspects on scene without incident. Following the incident, a K9 member located and seized the canister of sensory irritant believed to have been used in the offense.
During the investigation, officers determined the three suspects in custody were the same suspects involved in the theft that occurred on July 3 at the Chain Lake Canadian Tire.
Garik Johnny, 18, is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court today to face charges of robbery and disguise with intent.
A 16-year-old male youth is scheduled to appear in Halifax youth court today to face charges of:
· Robbery
· Disguise with intent
· Possession of break instruments
· Theft of property under $5000.00
· Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000.00
· Failure to comply with undertaking
· Breach of probation order (x2)
A 14-year-old female youth is scheduled to appear in Halifax youth court at a later date to face charges of:
· Robbery
· Possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace
· Carrying a concealed weapon
· Possession of a prohibited weapon

Police investigate shooting
Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in Williamswood last night.
At approximately 10:40 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 2600 block of Old Sambro Road in Williamswood. Upon arrival, officers located a residence that had been struck. There were no reported physical injuries.
A male suspect, dressed in dark clothing fled the area in a dark colored four door sedan or small SUV.
Members of the Forensic Identification Section attended and processed the scene. Investigators with the Integrated General Investigation Section are investigating.
The investigation is still in the early stages, but the home was believed to be targeted and not random.

Police continue to investigate homicide of Vincent “Hank” Pius Griffin
Today marks the forty-fifth anniversary of the homicide of Vincent “Hank” Pius Griffin
On June 30, 1981, at approximately 8:05 a.m., police responded to a report that there was a vehicle left running in front of 2454 John Street in Halifax with a man slumped across the front seat. Officers found 43-year-old Vincent Griffin deceased in his vehicle. Vincent’s vehicle, a maroon 1977 dodge two-door hardtop, had been observed in the area shortly after midnight.
Investigators believe that there are people who have information that could help solve Vincent’s homicide. Investigators hope that the passage of time will encourage them to do the right thing and come forward with what they know. The smallest piece of information may be just what is needed to progress the investigation.
The Special Investigation Section of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division continues to investigate the case and encourages anyone with information to contact police at 902-490-5020.
Vincent’s case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program which offers cash rewards of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of person(s) responsible for specified major unsolved crimes. Callers must contact the Rewards Program at 1-888-710-9090, must provide their name and contact information, and may be called to testify in court. All calls will be recorded. The amount of the award will be based on the investigative value of the information provided.

Halifax Regional Police responded to 814 calls for service over the weekend. Some notable incidents are as follows:
Police charge man with weapons offences and uttering threats
On June 26 at approximately 10:15 p.m., police responded to a weapons incident at the McDonald’s located at 25 Nantucket Avenue in Dartmouth. The caller reported that a man approached him and his two friends outside, asked them for a cigarette and threatened them with a metal object. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect in the parking lot and arrested him.
A 40-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court at a later date to face charges of uttering threats to cause bodily harm or death (x3) and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace.

Police charge man with dangerous operation and flight from police
On June 28 at approximately 11:55 a.m., police observed a vehicle believed to be stolen, travelling on Burnside Drive, near Wright Avenue in Dartmouth. Officers did not initiate a traffic stop at that time but followed the vehicle from a distance. Upon seeing police, the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. Officers did not pursue and lost sight of the vehicle.
At approximately 1:55 p.m., officers located the vehicle, broken down with a flat tire, on Highway 118. The suspect was arrested without incident.
Travis Thompson, 27, is scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court today to face charges of:

Homicide victim identified
The victim of a homicide in Dartmouth on Friday has been identified.
On June 26 at approximately 10:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting on Lahey Road in Dartmouth. Officers arrived on scene and located a man who had been shot. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service conducted an autopsy and confirmed the man’s manner of death to be homicide. The victim has been identified as 39-year-old Thomas Junior Downey from North Preston.
Halifax Regional Police extend their condolences to Mr. Downey’s family and loved ones.
The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made at this time.

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred in Dartmouth last night, leaving one man dead.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting on Lahey Road in Dartmouth. Officers arrived on scene and located a 39-year-old man who had been shot. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The incident is being treated as a homicide. The investigation by the Major Crime Unit of the Integrated Criminal Investigation Division is ongoing.

Police respond to shooting
Police are responding to a shooting that occurred this morning in Halifax.
At approximately 9:20 a.m., police responded to a report of a shooting in the 3300 block of St. Andrews Avenue in Halifax. Officers located a 25-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound and provided life-saving measures until he was transported to the hospital by EHS. The man’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
There is a heavy police presence in the area and St. Andrews Avenue to Federal Avenue is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
The investigation is in the early stages; however, police do not believe this is a random incident.

Halifax Regional Police responded to 780 calls for service over the weekend. Some notable incidents are as follows:
Police arrest three youth for assault with a weapon
On June 19 at approximately 7:30 p.m. police responded to the area of Lavender Walk and Greystone Drive in Halifax for a report of a group of youth wearing medical masks and shooting a weapon in the air. When officers arrived, they found a second group of youth who reported encountering the first group. They said a weapon was pointed at them before the suspects fled. The suspects then returned, assaulted one of the youths, and fired a shot at them. The weapon is believed to be a BB gun.
All three suspects were located and arrested without incident.
The victims did not require medical attention.

Police are investigating a train-pedestrian collision
Police are investigating after a pedestrian was struck by a train last night in Bedford.
At approximately 8:05 p.m., police responded to a report that a woman had been struck by a train near the 960-block of the Bedford Highway in Bedford. Upon arrival, officers learned that two women were walking on the railway tracks when they saw an approaching train. As they tried to move off the tracks, one of the women was struck by the side of the train.
A 24-year-old woman was transported to the hospital by EHS with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
Police do not suspect foul play.
