@MichelleBellish @robertkaplinsky Why would you want to square a negative number, if you don't know whether it is the right number? Unless, you are computer, that is. By all means, I agree that some calculation skill is useful, but the conceptual understanding, mathematisation and problem solving are essential.
@hisenhardt@robertkaplinsky Whether it affects the teaching or not, it does affect the learning. Students stop paying attention to what is not tested. I am trying this at 1st semester Uni, and I expect to sacrifice a couple of cohorts before the contents of new exam papers start to sink in.

In particular, the ability to wonder about anything is often lost before the learner gets to uni. It is hard work to reawaken it.

@dyong I have met some senior colleagues who had their first job as a computer. No doubt the the typical maths course is very appropriate for such a career. When will we realise that our students will never become computers?
@robertkaplinsky Akin to my business students I think. Unit cost and marginal cost are easily calculated. Thereafter asked what price is required to break even, ~2 out of 135 have a clue. Many students equate unit and marginal cost and solve the equation to find cost optimum ... #Math
