HOW TO GET YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS RECOMMENDED BY AI IN 2026
I spent a stupid amount of time researching how ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Siri, Alexa, and Grok decide which businesses to recommend.
This is everything I found.
The search market is fragmenting. Google's share as the go to recommendation platform dropped from 83% to 71% in a single year.
45% of consumers are now using AI tools to find local businesses. That number was 6% one year ago. That is a 650% increase.
If you are only optimizing for traditional Google right now you are building on a foundation that is shrinking.
Here is the good news. A study of 6.8 million AI citations found that 86% of what AI platforms cite comes from sources that businesses already control.
Your website. Your directory listings. Your reviews.
You already own the assets. You just need to optimize them for how AI consumes information.
Let me walk you through exactly what to do.
CLAIM EVERY LISTING THAT EXISTS
Most business owners have a Google Business Profile and maybe a Yelp page and they think they are done.
You are not done.
AI platforms pull from dozens of different data sources. Foursquare. Bing Places. Apple Business Connect. BBB. MapQuest. Yellow Pages. Facebook. TripAdvisor. Industry specific directories.
Every single one of these feeds into at least one major AI platform. Some feed into multiple.
If your business doesn't exist on a platform, AI cannot recommend you from that platform. It is that simple.
Go claim every listing you can find. Make sure the name, address, and phone number match exactly across all of them. Not close. Exactly.
One listing says "Suite 200" and another says "Ste 200" and you've just created a data conflict that makes AI less confident in your business.
NAP consistency has always mattered for local SEO. It matters 10x more now because AI platforms are cross referencing multiple sources to verify you are real and legitimate before recommending you to anyone.
REVIEWS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING AND IT ISN'T CLOSE
I have said this a hundred times about the map pack and I am going to say it again about AI search.
Reviews are king.
AI does not just count your stars. It reads your reviews word by word. It analyzes the sentiment. It looks at how recent they are. It evaluates how you respond.
When someone asks AI for the best roofer in their city, AI is reading through reviews across Google, Yelp, and every other platform it has access to and making a judgment call.
"Great service" in a review is basically worthless to AI. It tells the algorithm nothing.
"They replaced our entire roof in two days, showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves, and charged exactly what they quoted" tells AI everything it needs to know.
You need to coach your customers into leaving detailed reviews. Not fake ones. Real ones that describe what you did, how you did it, and how it went.
You also need to be getting reviews across multiple platforms. Not just Google. AI pulls reviews from Yelp, industry directories, Facebook, and BBB simultaneously.
97% of consumers still read reviews when choosing a business. 41% say they always read them. That number is up from 29% last year.
And here is one that should scare you. 50% of consumers say that if a business responds to reviews with generic copy paste responses, they are less likely to choose that business.
Stop copy pasting "Thank you for your kind words!" on every review. Respond with something real. Reference what they said. Be a human.
80% of consumers prefer businesses that respond to every single review. Not some. Every single one.
YOUR WEBSITE CONTENT NEEDS TO CHANGE
The way AI reads your website is completely different from how Google's traditional algorithm reads it.
AI is looking for clean, direct, extractable answers. It wants to pull a 40 to 80 word block from your page that directly answers a question and present it to the user.
If your website is full of fluff and filler and doesn't actually say anything useful, AI will skip you and cite someone else.
Every service page on your site should open with a direct answer to what the service is, who needs it, and what it costs. No beating around the bush. No "welcome to our website" nonsense.
Structure your content in short, self contained paragraphs that can be understood in isolation. AI might pull one paragraph from the middle of your page. If that paragraph doesn't make sense on its own, it is useless.
FAQ content is massive right now. Create FAQ sections that mirror how real customers actually ask questions.
Don't write "HVAC Repair Services in Phoenix." Write content that answers "How much does it cost to replace an AC unit in Arizona?" and "Why does my air conditioner keep shutting off?"
Those are the questions people are typing into AI. If your website answers them clearly you have a shot at being cited.
Location pages still matter but they need to be real. Not city swap garbage where you change the city name and publish the same content 40 times. AI sees right through that.
Each location page should have neighborhood specific details, photos from actual jobs in that area, and content that proves you actually serve that location.
BUILD YOUR BRAND MENTIONS EVERYWHERE
This is the one most business owners don't understand yet.
The biggest ranking factor across AI platforms is something called consensus. It means how many credible sources across the web mention your business favorably.
If 200 different web pages across the internet mention your business in a positive light, AI is going to recommend you. If only 20 pages mention you, it probably won't.
Experts estimate you need about 250 documents across the web to meaningfully influence how AI perceives your brand.
That sounds like a lot. It isn't as hard as you think.
Every directory listing counts. Every social media profile counts. Every press mention counts. Every blog post that references your business counts. Every local news article counts.
Here is how to build those up.
Get listed in your local Chamber of Commerce. Sponsor a little league team and get a mention on their site. Donate to a local charity and get listed on their donor page. Get quoted in a local news article. Write a guest post for a local blog. Get featured in an industry publication.
Every single one of those creates a new document on the web that mentions your business.
This is the new link building. Except instead of building links for Google's algorithm, you are building brand mentions for AI's recommendation engine.
The more places your business name appears in a credible context online, the more likely AI is to recommend you.
INDUSTRY SPECIFIC DIRECTORIES ARE A GOLDMINE
This is something almost nobody is talking about yet.
When AI is asked to recommend a dentist, it doesn't just go look at Google. It pulls from dental specific directories. https://t.co/KfWKDnLgBP. Healthgrades. Zocdoc.
When AI is asked for a lawyer, it pulls from Avvo. SuperLawyers. FindLaw. Justia.
When AI is asked for a roofer or HVAC company, it pulls from Angi. HomeAdvisor. BBB. Thumbtack.
A study found that when recommending dentists, one major AI platform pulled exclusively from 10 dental directories. Not from dentist websites. Not from Google profiles. Only from industry directories.
If you are not listed in the top directories for your specific industry, you are invisible to AI for a massive chunk of queries.
Go find out what the top 5 to 10 directories are for your industry and make sure you have a complete, optimized profile on every single one. Photos, reviews, services, everything filled out.
SCHEMA MARKUP ON YOUR WEBSITE
This is the technical one that most business owners will need their web developer to handle.
Schema markup is code that tells AI exactly what your business is, where it is located, what services you offer, and what your customers say about you.
Without schema markup, AI has to guess what your page is about by reading it. With schema markup, you are handing AI the answers on a silver platter.
Research found that properly structured content with schema markup has a 73% higher chance of being selected by AI compared to content without it.
At minimum you need LocalBusiness schema on your homepage. Service schema on each service page. FAQ schema on your FAQ content. Review and rating schema.
If you are a doctor, lawyer, or any other professional, add Person schema with links to your credentials, your state licensing board, and your profiles on platforms like Avvo or Healthgrades.
AI uses these connections to verify that you are who you say you are.
PROXIMITY DOESN'T MATTER LIKE IT USED TO
This is the biggest shift I have seen and nobody is talking about it enough.
In the traditional map pack, proximity is the number one factor. If the searcher is physically closer to your business you have an advantage.
A study of 60,000 queries found that in AI search results, the correlation between distance and ranking position is 0.001. That is effectively zero.
Distance does not matter in AI results.
What matters is authority. Content quality. Review volume and sentiment. Brand mentions. Consistent data across the web.
A highly reviewed business with detailed content three miles away will outrank a mediocre one around the corner.
This changes the competitive dynamics for every local market in the country. It doesn't matter if your competitor has a better location than you anymore. What matters is whether your online presence is stronger than theirs.
ANSWER YOUR PHONE
Google launched a feature where AI literally calls businesses on behalf of searchers to get pricing and availability.
AI pricing calls to local businesses jumped over 300% in a two month period. Plumbing businesses saw a 650% increase. Vet clinics saw over 1,700%.
26% of those calls went completely unanswered.
48% of businesses that did answer could not provide pricing.
Think about that. AI is sending you a warm lead and you are either not picking up or fumbling it when you do.
Train your front desk staff. Have pricing guides ready. Answer the phone on every single call. This is money walking through the door that most businesses are leaving on the table.
REDDIT MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK
Reddit has become one of the most cited sources across AI platforms. It shows up in over 40% of AI generated responses.
If someone in your city's subreddit asks "who is the best dentist in town" and three people mention your practice, AI is going to notice that.
You can't spam Reddit. They will destroy you. But you can become a genuine contributor to your local subreddit.
Answer questions. Give real advice. Be helpful. Build relationships. Let the recommendations happen naturally.
One of our personal injury lawyer clients lives in his city's subreddit. Free legal advice. Donates to GoFundMes. Goes to high school football games. Leads are not a problem for him.
AI SEARCH TRAFFIC CONVERTS AT 5X THE RATE OF GOOGLE
Here is the stat that should grab every business owner's attention.
A study of 12 million website visits found that traffic from AI search converts at 14.2% compared to Google's 2.8%. That is 5x higher.
The volume is still small. AI referral traffic is about 1 to 2% of total traffic for most businesses right now.
But those visitors are 5 times more likely to become customers. AI is doing the qualification for you. By the time someone clicks through from an AI recommendation, they already trust you.
That 1 to 2% of traffic might be producing a disproportionate amount of your revenue and you don't even know it.
START TODAY
Here is the order of operations.
Claim and optimize every directory listing you can find. Make your NAP identical across all of them.
Get your reviews up across multiple platforms. Not just Google. Yelp, BBB, and your industry directories.
Rewrite your website content to be direct, answer first, and easy for AI to extract. Add schema markup.
Build brand mentions everywhere you can. Sponsor local events. Get press coverage. Be active in your community online and offline.
Respond to every review with a real response. Answer your phone. Have pricing ready.
Best of luck.

🚨CLAUDE + SEO = $$$$$
Claude can now do SEO like a $10k/month agency (for free).
Most local businesses have no idea this is possible.
Here are 7 insane Claude Cowork prompts that can take your biz to $100k/month : (Save for later)
“This Scientist invented a Cancer protocol that my own mother used to survive”
“She wrote a book called Cure All Cancers”
“She gave them three herbs, three plants all in supplement form for 5 days - she cured all of them”
More people than ever before believe that there are numerous cures for Cancer - which are all suppressed by big Pharma - in pursuit of profit.
Every time I audit a local business I find the same mistakes over and over.
Meta title says Home. Change it to your keyword plus city. Took me 30 seconds to fix this for a plastic surgeon and their rankings shot up overnight.
No address in the website footer. Google wants to see where you are located on your actual site. Add it. Watch what happens.
H1 tag says Welcome to Our Company. Nobody searches welcome to our company. Put your service plus your city in there. AC Repair San Diego. Roofer Fort Worth. Plumber Gilbert.
GBP category is wrong. You are a kitchen remodeler but your category says contractor. Search your keyword. Match what the top 3 have. This alone can double your calls.
No photos uploaded in 6 months. Google thinks you are dead. Upload weekly. Job site photos. Team photos. Truck photos. Anything that shows you have a pulse.
Review responses are generic. "Thank you for your review." That does nothing. Put keywords in your responses. "We love serving customers in the Austin area for all their plumbing needs." Feed the algorithm.
Citations have wrong phone number. Your old number is still on YellowPages and Yelp and 40 other sites. Inconsistent NAP is killing you. Fix it everywhere.
No location pages. You serve 15 cities but have one homepage. Build a page for each city. Each page targets that city plus your service. Stop making Google guess.
Blogs about topics nobody searches. The history of air conditioning is not getting you leads. Build pages that target buyers.
Not asking employees to use Google Maps directions when they drive to work. Engagement signals matter. Every time someone navigates to your address Google notices.
No GBP posts in 3 months. Weekly updates with photos and keywords. Takes 5 minutes. Shows Google you exist.
Only one GBP when you could have three. Get offices in different parts of your metro. Triple your coverage.
Relying on a service area business when every competitor has a physical pin. You cannot win that fight. Get a real address.
Not tracking calls. You have no idea how many leads you get or where they come from. Install call tracking today. Stop guessing.
Website loads in 8 seconds on mobile. People bounce before they see anything. Fix your page speed or your rankings mean nothing.
No schema markup telling Google your business name address and hours. Easy win that most people skip.
Backlinks from the same garbage sites as everyone else. Get local links. Sponsor a little league team. Join the chamber. Guest on a local podcast.
Ignoring Reddit. Your city subreddit has people asking for recommendations every day. Be helpful. Build trust.
Not listed on niche directories for your industry. Plumbers need plumber directories. HVAC needs HVAC directories.
I used Reddit to grow a client's AI traffic by 2,814%...
And their referral traffic by 642%.
Here's the thing: Reddit is now the top source Google and ChatGPT pull from when
answering questions.
If you're not in those threads, you're invisible.

Don’t tell Pfizer
🚨 Stage 4 Cancer... GONE in 3 Months — Naturally!
A 73-year-old woman was told there was no cure. Stage 4. “Nothing we can do,” doctors said.
👉 But just 90 days later… her scans showed NO disease detected.
What changed?
Her son went down the research rabbit hole on X and found my posts on IP6 (Inositol Hexaphosphate), juicing, Mesima mushrooms, and Ivermectin.
Here’s what she did ⬇️
• 🥄 IP6: 2 scoops, twice a day on an empty stomach
• 🥕 24 oz carrot juice daily (+ some other juices)
• 🍄 A bit of Mesima mushroom & Olive leaf
• 💉 3 immunotherapy sessions (docs said it wouldn’t cure her)
• 💊 Ivermectin: added as support — we’re seeing more and more remarkable responses when it’s included 👏
⚡ No chemo. No radiation. No Fenben.
And guess what? The cancer disappeared.
This isn’t a one-off story. I’ve been receiving multiple reports of stunning cancer reversals using these exact protocols — especially IP6, juicing, and Ivermectin.
There are also published studies and case reports showing the same thing:
👉 These natural compounds have powerful anticancer effects.
People deserve to know this.
(But shhh… don’t tell Pfizer, or they might “regulate” them 😉)
