The Frustration, Pain, and Anguish of the Nigerian Outsourced Banker

Since I began writing about #BankersSpeakUp, I’ve been privileged—and heartbroken—to hear firsthand accounts of what Nigerian outsourced bankers are enduring. It’s disheartening to witness these individuals working in the midst of plenty, with banks consistently declaring billions and trillions in profits, while the majority of these staff members live in extreme poverty. They endure pain and humiliation, both from their employers and supervisors.

It’s painfully clear: some Nigerians become mean-spirited when given a little power or influence. The way they treat those beneath them shows a lack of humility and basic decency.

Beyond the cruelty of paying outsourced staff below minimum wage—as low as ₦33,000 or ₦39,000 (facts)—many are stuck on the same grade and salary for five years or more, despite the crushing effects of inflation. Some have only received one negligible raise in ten years!

Even worse, these workers are dehumanized, treated as if they are less than human, with no shred of dignity in the way they are handled.

Take this recent example: a bank reviews salaries for all staff. It increases an Entry Trainee’s salary by ₦1.8 million annually (a 40% raise), but gives outsourced staff a mere ₦25,000 per month (₦300,000 annually). When questioned, the bank claims it isn’t making enough profits—this, from a bank that reported over ₦700 billion in profits for Q3 alone!

Every day, these outsourced bankers shoulder the hardest tasks, ensuring the banks remain profitable, yet they receive the smallest share of the rewards.

In my opinion, this exploitation must end. There’s no other option.
