Per Ohlin, better known by his stage name Dead, was the lead singer of the Norwegian black metal band Mayhem.

When he was 10, he was attacked by some bullies who injured him so badly that he was briefly declared clinically dead at the hospital.

After the incident, Ohlin developed an intense obsession with anything related to death.

He collected dead birds, wore corpse paint during performances and routinely cut himself onstage and in front of friends.

He was believed to have suffered from Cotard syndrome, a mental disorder characterized by the belief that you are truly dead and don’t exist in reality.

In 1991, at age 22, Dead cut his wrists and throat before shooting himself in the head with a shotgun.

He left a brief note beginning “Excuse all the blood” and apologized for firing the gun indoors.

His body was soon discovered by one of his bandmates, who immediately ran to a nearby store and bought a disposable camera instead of contacting the police.

He took multiple photos of his dead friend and would later use one of them as cover art for a Mayhem bootleg album called The Dawn of the Black Hearts.
