South Africa’s Country-In-Focus designation has been withdrawn by Puebla International Literature Festival in Mexico.
The invitation of South African guests and panelists have been withdrawn.
The festival made this decision over the victimization of Chidimma Vanessa Adetshina during her participation in Miss South Africa.
“Honestly I’m so shocked right now, to be treated this badly”
Faiza Shaheen, who was set to stand for Labour, describes hearing that her candidacy had been pulled over liking a series of Tweets which she claims Labour said would frustrate its campaign

@DumaGqubule@alemayehuGeda There are many aspects that offer lessons, both ways. It’s quite deceptive to consider the rate of unemployment appears so low, but consider underemployment and the difference between what prevails in a rural setting that is largely agrarian (now disrupted severely by..) 1/2
Over 100,000 civilians killed, maimed and injured in Gaza.
Yet, our political leaders still say with unabashed arrogance that Israel has the right to defend itself.
Free Palestine. End the occupation. Ceasefire Now
It's disgusting watching you co-opt Palestinian suffering to lie about Tigray once again. Tigray leaders ran a brutal dictatorship in Ethiopia for 27 years; held thousands of political prisoners, tortured, killed. Thousands died to get them out of power. In 2020, they started a war to return to power. You'll never kill the Ethiopian people's truth. @timnitGebru
Israel is still bombing Gaza with airstrikes on Rafah
Not even 32,414 Palestinians killed, 14,000 of them children and 74,694 maimed, amputated and injured or the UN’s ceasefire vote has stopped Israel
Israel does not want peace it wants Gaza. Stop arming Israel. Sanctions now
petition to demand the @DOJCD_ZA automatically expunges criminal records for those who qualify. This is our opportunity to put pressure on the Department of Justice to make this expungement process seamless and accessible for those who need it https://t.co/FvU4ionx4D
Disappointing to see Labour drop £28 billion in Green Prosperity Plan. Climate & growth are NOT a tradeoff. This is a long-term investment to tap into UK's massive green potential (green industry growing 4x faster than others).

Accountability will mean businesses bearing the true cost of exploitation. All this eats into profits. Inequality and violence is embedded in the system, and won’t be easily uprooted. Enabling these is used as an edge against competition. A new global order has to rise 3/3
Germany is likely to vote ‘no’ on E.U. due diligence on human rights law, due to opposition by companies on liability regime along supply chains. While Germany has a Supply Chain Act, this does not include a liability regime.1/2 https://t.co/9K31l8aNe4
While Germany has a Supply Chain Act that, it does not include a liability clause. This is like watching the Treaty on Corporate Accountability get defanged. Not only can’t corporates ‘self-regulate’, corporate dominance ensures state won’t commit economic suicide 2/2
It has been clear for a long while now. if the actions of cruelty are the result of calculations there is some rationality that can be traced to contest it. How do you argue with ignorance? This is a shallow attempt to abscond from responsibility.
PM Abiy Ahmed to Parliament —
Even for me, there are still many things that I don't understand. The reason why the world puts pressure on this country is not clear to me.
Sometimes, I try to see it from a political perspective, and sometimes I try to see it spiritually, and I ask if it could be because Ethiopia is God's covenant land as it is said. I don't know. It confuses me. You search, and I will also search.
In his parliamentary address today, PM Abiy claimed democracy was paving ways for the prevailing state of anarchy in #Ethiopia.
His response followed a question from MP Weldeyes Debebe on reports of government harassment and unlawful imprisonment of individuals with dissenting opinions including politicians and media practitioners.
“First of all, if there is no democracy in the first place, where did all this visible anarchy come from? Democracy gives birth to anarchy,” PM Abiy said.
