🚨 Erling Haaland on Ayoub Bouaddi’s performance against Porto:
🗣️ Haaland: “I remember one of the first 11v11 games we played with Ayoub in training. Everyone was enjoying themselves, trying things, dribbling, going into duels. Ayoub’s idea of having fun was apparently just passing the ball to everybody.
He was on the other team and every time they had the ball, somehow it went through him.
Cherki came over to me at one point and said, ‘He’s a very good passer, but look at the space he has. Nobody is really pressing him.’
So the next time Ayoub received it, suddenly there were three players around him. I thought, ‘Okay, now let’s see.’
He took one touch, moved his body, played out of it and their team was attacking again.
That’s when I understood it wasn’t just his passing. He already knew where the pressure was coming from before the pressure arrived.
After training I asked him why everything looked so easy for him. He said, ‘You guys work too hard. You want to run past people, fight people, overpower people. Sometimes you can just stand in the right place and pass the ball.’
I remember looking at him thinking, ‘You’re 18. Why are you talking to me like you’re retiring next year?’
Then you watch him against Porto and it’s the same thing. Champions League, first start, away from home, people pressing him… and he’s playing like it’s another training session.
He wasn’t hiding with safe passes either. He was receiving under pressure, turning out of it and keeping us moving.
That’s what surprised me most. At 18, normally the experienced players are trying to make the young player comfortable.
With Ayoub, sometimes I think he’s the one trying to make the rest of us comfortable.”
