I had a similar (but obviously not as traumatic) experience! I was flying a HK airline from Shanghai to Hong Kong and heard the flight attendants speaking with passengers in Mandarin approaching from behind giving drinks. When they got to me I asked for a Coke Zero with ice in Mandarin, and the female flight attendant really rudely replied, in English: “I’m from Hong Kong, I don’t speak Mandarin.”

This was at the height of the HK riots and attacks on mainland Chinese there, so I became really angry and refused to budge. I replied in Mandarin that I had just heard her speaking Mandarin and to not be so damn rude, and to give me a Coke Zero with ice, please.

After that situation I was so annoyed that I refused to speak English at all during my entire stay.
