Jax being unable to change because she decided her self-preservation was more important than looking after the people closest to her or being a decent person was the entire point. There’s something to actually learn from that. Refusal to engage with that is refusal of the story.
My issue with Bakugo is that instead of developing him into the character he wanted him to be, Horikoshi opted to downplay how bad he was and just keep him in a certain marketable rival pocket, even with moments of development there’s no real catharsis in him changing.
Jax’s story is a different type of story. It’s a cautionary tale of choosing vapid irony over sincerity. Her choice to be an asshole drove the people closest to her to “death” and eventually herself. The story isn’t trying at every turn to make you think Jax is Cool and Epic.
Here’s the thing, right? Part of me gets it. I lost interest in MHA over time because of how much it focused on Bakugo, who I considered unlikable and didn’t enjoy much. The flip side of that is MHA went on for nearly 10 years and (in my POV) he didn’t change in a meaningful way.
