If you have spent any time abroad, especially in the global South, you will know that the 3rd world sees priveleged 1st worlders as the most naiive, childlike suckers on the planet. A simple smile convinces us someone is our friend. A simple mention of distress elicits our concern. We take everything at face value and fail to question anything. We are big fat, bumbling juicy marks to the hustlers of the world. We are educated to believe that our privilege has made us cruel. But what is has really done is made us gullible and soft. And just like tourists smiling benevolently at the 'natives', a lot of us are about to feel about our pockets and say 'Hey, where's my wallet"? You won't like what's coming next.
The Lucerne Auction in Switzerland, held in 1939, marked the Third Reich's first concerted attempt to make money off of 'degenerate' art they had confiscated from Germany's leading museums and institutions. It also marked the beginning of the erasure of Jewish culture and life from Nazi Germany. Five of the works sold at Lucerne are now part of the permanent collection at the MoMA. Read about it here:
