When it premiered in December of 1989, The Simpsons took America by storm. By the early ‘90s, Simpsons mania was in full effect. Unauthorized Simpsons T-shirts were everywhere. From swap meets to gas stations, bootleg Simpsons tees were the most ubiquitous (and inescapable) commodities of the ‘90s, even more so than flannel shirts and overalls. The shirts heavily featured Bart, who had emerged as the star character. As proof of his popularity, TIME magazine named Bart Simpson the 46th most influential person of the 20th century – the only fictional character on the list.

Thanks to Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield – two phases of the Gulf War, in which the United States battled Iraq in Kuwait – Bart’s only competition for notoriety in American pop culture from 1990 – 1991 was the President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein. Thus came an odd crossover in T-shirt history, a clash of the titans immortalized by a slew of Bart Simpson Desert Storm T-shirts.
