One of the reasons the earliest attempts at Islamic banking in Nigeria, such as the dedicated Islamic banking windows in the old Bank PHB or Habib Nigeria Bank, faced so much scrutiny was because people kept asking this exact question you've just asked. They couldn’t understand how a financial institution could survive without the crutch of interest.

As time went by, scholars and financial experts needed to find a way out of this recurring problem. They had to prove that Islamic banks could cover their significant operating costs, infrastructure, and personnel without taking or giving a single naira of Riba (interest).

To do this, they developed authentic, asset-backed, money-making mechanisms that are foundational to Islamic banking today.

Please note that these are not just "interest with a different name," they are different entirely from the conventional interest-based banking.

Here is exactly why they are completely different from conventional banking:

1. Murabahah (Cost-Plus Financing): In a conventional bank, if you want a car, they give you a cash loan with interest, and you pay back cash for cash with an added percentage. That is Riba.

In an Islamic bank using Murabahah, the bank actually buys the car from the dealer themselves, owns it, and then sells that physical car to you at a disclosed profit margin, allowing you to pay in installments. The profit comes from a real trade transaction, not from renting out money.

2. Mudarabah and Musharakah (Partnership Models): Instead of just pooling deposits from savers and giving them a fixed, guaranteed interest rate, an Islamic bank acts as a partner.

In Mudarabah, the bank manages your funds in halal ventures, and the profit is shared based on a pre-agreed ratio, while the customer bears the financial risk.

In Musharakah, both parties pool capital for a business, sharing both the profits and the losses. The bank puts skin in the game. They earn by working and taking risk, not by exploiting a debtor.

3. Ijarah (Leasing): Instead of lending money to buy equipment, the bank buys the equipment and leases it to the customer for an agreed rental fee. The bank retains ownership and bears the risk of the asset, making the rental income entirely halal.

Having said this, now, let us talk about the reality of navigating a conventional financial ecosystem.

Because Islamic banks have to operate under the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), they are sometimes forced by regulatory compliance to participate in clearing systems or transactions that inadvertently generate Non-Permissible Income (NPI), such as penalty fees or unavoidable interest-bearing statutory reserves.

Islamic banks do not use this money to cover their infrastructure or staff salaries. Instead, they have a strict purification process. This NPI is completely segregated and channeled directly to charitable causes, such as funding public health clinics, building schools, or helping the poor. The bank derives zero corporate benefit from it.

One thing Islam prioritizes is striving toward the best, and not absolute perfection. We live in a highly imperfect, conventional financial world. These institutions are doing their best to be upon the truth, creating a halal alternative for millions of Muslims, and leaving the remaining gaps for the Almighty to pardon.

But to throw your hands up, capitulate completely, and allow Shaitan to trick you into thinking Riba is unavoidable just because banking has costs? What will then be the difference between us and them?

Day 6 of pad awareness series

One of the major challenges of Nigerian products that has affected pad products now is Fake Brands.

The problem is not just that fake pads exist in the market. The bigger problem is that the real brands are not helping us identify them. Every day, women walk into shops and see packs that look exactly like the original. Same color, same logo, same design. But inside, the material is different. It smells of glue and chemicals. It causes itching, burns, and infections. Yet none of the major pad brands have made it simple for us to know which pack is real and which is fake.

There are no clear instructions on the packs. No QR code to scan. No scratch card with a code to send for verification. No unique batch number that we can check with a simple text message. We are left to guess. And when we guess wrong, our bodies pay the price.

These fake replicas are not made by small unknown companies. They are exact copies of popular brands. Someone is manufacturing them with the same packaging, and the original brands are either silent or slow, asimple phone verification system would solve half the problem or even a public notice on the brand's social media pages showing real vs fake side by side would save many women from harm. But we do not see any of this.

So the complaint today is to every pad brand that allows fakes to flood the market while saying nothing. You know your products. You know your packaging. You know the difference. But you leave us to suffer because you do not care and because you do not clarify women are now afraid to buy any pad at all. Some have turned to diapers, which bring their own dangers. That is on you.

We are tired of buying poison wrapped in your colors. Give us a way to know the difference. Make it simple. @NafdacAgency

Dear Parents,

I want to share one parenting secret with you. The one you won’t find in your regular blogs. And trust me, regardless of your faith, you will find this tip beneficial.

I want to explain why some kids become completely stubborn the more you punish them. I am doing this because I got some messages yesterday from people who have kids in the diaspora and how their kids have become stone-hearted to their parents’ warnings. It is indeed painful.

Remember that I mentioned the monumental book of Imam Al-Ghazali, Ihya’ Ulum al-Din. We have more things to learn from it.

In this book, he talked about a fragile part of a child's mind called the “Veil of Shame.” Note: Every child has this because they are born upon Fitrah (purity of the soul).

When a child does something bad for the first time, they usually try to hide it. They are afraid of being caught because they still value their dignity in your eyes.

The scholars explained that if a parent exposes the child, screams, yells at them, and punishes every mistake, you are tearing down their veil of shame.

Once a child realizes you already see them as a bad person, the humiliation has happened. They stop caring. You have destroyed their internal brakes. When they have no dignity left to protect, they will start doing those bad things openly and boldly.

How do you notice this in your child?

You can tell this is happening in your child when they stop trying to hide their mistakes and start becoming brazen or "strong-headed" when caught. This is a sign that the veil is thinning.

To fix this, you need to use a concept called Taghaful. It translates to intentional ignorance or pretending you did not see a fault.

Our Prophet (peace be upon him) taught us this. He did this with a young companion called Usama bin Zaid. But I see that our parents, due to their high expectations, are often too impatient to look away.

If you catch your child doing a hidden wrong, sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is pretend you did not see it. Do not confront them and strip them of their respect.

Instead, bring up the topic later in a general conversation. Tell a story about why that action is destructive, without looking at them or accusing them. Let their own conscience do the punishing. Let them repent and fix it in secret.

A parent who hunts down every small mistake will end up raising a child who has no shame left to lose.

Let me know if you want more of these scholarly parenting tips. I will be willing to share. My DM is full with different issues. I cannot answer everything, but I am sure with these tips, a lot of those issues will be solved by God’s grace.

The earth is just one of 200-400 Billion planets in a galaxy of 2 trillion galaxies.

Everything we see of 2 trillion galaxies is just 4% of what is out there, (the observable universe), we still don’t know 96% of the whole universe of the first heaven.

And the first heaven compared to the second heaven is like a ring in a desert and so on.

The 7 heavens compared to the Kursiy of Allah is like a ring in a desert.

The 7 heavens and the kursiy of Allah compared to the throne of Allah is like a ring in a desert.

To us, this is magnificent, to Almighty Allah, the whole of the heavens plus the Kursiy and the throne of Allah is just another kun fa yakun.

He can decide to create or destroy it in a second.

He is Allah
The Almighty
The All-Powerful

He does as He wills,
None can question His decree,
And none can overturn His command,

When He intends a thing, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is,
His will is absolute, His power is complete,

He gives to whom He wills, and withholds from whom He wills,
He elevates whom He wills, and humbles whom He wills,

He is never compelled, never constrained,
Nothing in the heavens or the earth escapes His will,

He is Allah…
The Doer of whatever He wills,
Perfect in His wisdom, even when we do not understand.

The Creator of the heavens without pillars,
The Fashioner of the human soul with perfect precision.

The One who placed the stars as lamps in the sky,
And set the sun and moon in perfect balance,
The Giver of life and the Taker of it,

The Ever-Living, who never dies,
The Sustainer, whom all creation depends upon,
The Knower of the seen and the unseen,

The First, nothing came before Him,
The Last, nothing will remain after Him,
The Most High, above all that we can imagine,

He is Allah…
There is none worthy of worship except Him.
