A third temporal frame, that of crisis, is the most particular to authoritarian rule. Crisis time justifies states of emergency and the scapegoating of enemies who endanger the country from inside the nation or across the border.” 3/3
Utopia, the desire for a pristine and perfect community, links to the leader’s promise to obtain what his people feel the country lacks or has been deprived of.
Nostalgia for better times is also part of the equation, since the ruler’s vow is to make the country great again. 2/3
One of the best books I read last year was STRONGMEN by @ruthbenghiat:
“Strongman national projects generally leverage three time frames and states of mind: utopia, nostalgia, and crisis. 1/3
“It was always a lie. The whole thing was always a lie. And it was a lie meant to rile people up.”

@DrEenfeldt Counting calories worked for me. I lost 60 pounds in 1 year by tracking all food intake with a digital scale. I’ve maintained the same weight for 4.5 years by continuing to log calories every day. Counting calories revolutionized my health.
Johnny Cash: “You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space.”
“Shame thrives on secrecy, silence, and judgment. If you put shame into a petri dish and douse it with these three things, it will grow exponentially into every corner and crevice of our lives. The antidote to shame is empathy.”
– Brené Brown (Atlas of the Heart, 2021)
Eisenhower is my favorite President (1953-1961) for multiple reasons.
But on #DDay in 1944 he was the Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force. Overlord, the operation’s codename, was the largest amphibious invasion in military history.
Shout out to the guy in his 60s who loves @MonsterEnergy drinks so much that he put 6 Monster logo stickers strategically all over on his pickup truck. Not a single other decal on his vehicle.
I saw this a week ago, and I’m still thinking about it.
