There is so much noise everyday on this platform about how mediocre Indian commentators are but we don't realize how the toxic fan wars actually reinforce that mediocrity. Not defending the mediocrity but how come people not realise that the commentators have no other option but to play it safe lest they offend the troll army of the cricketing superstars of this country who will then rip them apart 24x7.

I mean look at the everyday trolling of Harsha Bhogle on this platform. The man has been the voice of the game for longer than all these trolls have been alive. And people are trolling him day in day out for having an opinion. Seriously? It is his job to have an opinion and express it by the virtue of being a commentator. And that too a great one who has made the world stand up and notice and who remains relevant in the industry even after 3 decades.

The newer commentators are well aware now that they have to only and only praise the big names of Indian cricket. And that too needs to be done uniformly, else troll army of player X would fill the comments section of that commentator with 'the Paid PR of player Y'. As a result, everyone on broadcast these days seems to be saying the same thing over and over again and there is no distinct voice. So, as much as we want to keep cribbing about it, the mediocrity in cricket commentary that we so despise is very much our own creation.
