Proud to take on the role of Minister for Border Security & Asylum at @ukhomeoffice
Stopping dangerous small boat crossings & fixing our broken asylum system are among the most pressing challenges we face as a nation.
Ready to get to work delivering for the British people. 🇬🇧
How can Labour revive the lido? 🏊
In the 1930s, the Labour-led lido programme showed that municipal socialism could create popular infrastructure and political credibility.
After a sweltering week, it’s time to renew that legacy.
In The People’s Pools, @GR1900 sets out how to fund and deliver new and restored lidos.
For the love of Lidos ☀️🏊🏊♀️🏊♂️
Great to share my passion for Peterborough Lido in this work by @GR1900@thefabians and to highlight the joy, pride & contribution of our Lidos & historic pools.
I wrote a memoir, The Bootle Boy. Leading character is Rupert Murdoch. I worked with Rupert 50 years and, love or hate him, he’s an authentic colossus. Complicated, too. As I write “He could be hands-off or autocratic charming or irascible forgiving or fierce and sometimes just a comprehensive pain” More excerpts https://t.co/9EHDF2xaNR Buy https://t.co/kKOjfUh5b5
Having become our brother, the Son of God looks at the people; He looks at humanity and sees the oppression that burdens and the violence that causes strength to fade. He sees the wounds of war and the emptiness of consumerism. He sees faces reduced to masks, families torn apart by evil, and young people misled by false ideals. Jesus sees and loves. He loves and suffers for and with us: His compassion expresses not only fraternal closeness, but His desire to redeem. #GospelOfToday (Mt 9:36 – 10:8)
"What the numbers show — unmistakably, uncomfortably — is that the tool is not reliably detecting AI. It is detecting craft."
So good.

Nothing like opening a boxful of new books. An updated version of my memoir The Bootle Boy. It’s about scrambling to the heights of one of the world's mightiest media empires & the demonic drive of its founder -- Rupert Murdoch. Out now.

We don’t want higher security fences, more guards, or more protection as our only solution. We just want to be free to live a normal life.
We want to walk into our schools and synagogues without fear of attack from those who hate us—and those encouraged to hate us by people who should know better.
Freedom shouldn't require a fortress. It shouldn't be too much to ask for in this country.
The terrible vision of the stabbing of Jewish people because of their Jewishness in London streets is unbearable and astonishing.
Firebombings of Jewish buildings and ambulances. Killings at synagogues on Yom Kippur. Stabbing of Jews in Golders Green.
Is this Britain today? Is this where we are now? Be under no illusion this is a threat not just to innocent Jewish people but also to the British way of life, to British freedoms and ultimately to all our citizens who believe in a free way of living. It has to stop now before something terrible happens.
It is surely vital that all those who embrace democratic values in all communities condemn this, not by rote but with conviction, and therein show some leadership.
But the platitudinous anti-racist nostrums of yesterday much favoured by politicians - some of whom incite bigotry at the same time - are no longer enough.
Action is essential; police, security services and Jewish organizations @CST @shomrinlondon @Hatzola and @metpoliceuk acted fast here....
But it is now time to end the sustained and irresponsible campaign of eliminationist incitement and libels of blood and evil that have been encouraged by some politicians and sanctioned by some social media, podcasts and above all mainstream media. I know that many are simply reflecting the new overton window of our times and do not mean harm but are just following the momentum of a zeitgeist. Well, that is no longer enough. It is time to awaken to what this permissive wave of hatred is already starting to unleash.... to stop and think what words means, what images suggest....
The old vocabulary of antiracism is outdated when the racists themselves have commandeered the platitudes of anti-racism; phrases like 'antisemitism is unacceptable' have been degraded to the extent that they are now meaningless or worse. Leaders need to state what is the antisemitism they stand against, why and how it is unacceptablable and in an age when so much hatespeak is banned how to stop this. Enough is enough.

Across England, access to life-changing surgery is unfairly being decided by BMI, ignoring clinical guidelines.
We're calling for an end to #BMI threshold policies to ensure that people with #arthritis waiting in pain get access to treatment. Read more: https://t.co/BKa8Q6m1LF
We're deeply concerned to hear that a trans-identified man, convicted of stalking his female surgeon, is housed in Downview Women’s Prison E Wing.
E Wing is NOT separate from the women’s estate

Impossible to overstate the importance of Jenni Murray to the movement of women that changed our politics, economy & our society; that changed our lives. She was the broadcasting wing of the women’s movement. We all owe her. RIP. https://t.co/7h2gLI9qqh
Oof. According to this interview, @theage in Australia republished one of @LachCartwright's photos without permission and refuses to pay. Not a great look for a news outlet https://t.co/Fb4TPkNGdl
Catholics are called to reject antisemitism and the lies and conspiracies that fuel it, and to stand clearly against hatred and violence directed toward our Jewish brothers and sisters. To defend religious freedom with integrity, we must also reject antisemitism.

“We know that black people, older people and women elect for trial at the crown court at higher rates than other groups. The protections of a jury trial are therefore central to the integrity of the system and are critical for victims, particularly women and those from minoritised groups, who are subject to discriminatory treatment and are already likely to mistrust the system.”

Hello, there 👋
Have you heard David Lammy MP and Sarah Sackman MP talking about people stealing bottles of whisky and swiping mobile telephones as examples of people who should not get jury trials?
Well. I’d like to tell you a story.
