Happy birthday to Sega!
You’ve probably noticed that whilst I post about all consoles and generally collect for almost everything under the sun, Sega probably gets the most love, especially the Saturn.
Sega meant a lot to me growing up and is tied to two of my favourite childhood memories: getting a Mega Drive for Christmas in 1992 and a Saturn for Christmas in 1996. I still can’t choose between those two moments. I loved both consoles and still play them regularly today.
The Dreamcast was special to me as well, the first console I bought with my own money after I started working! It deserved so much better and provided my first online gaming experience on console and how can I forget my 2nd hand Master System 2 which my mum bought off a neighbour, coming from an Atari 2600 to that was mind blowing for me, goodbye Jungle Hunt and hello Alex Kidd.
It was a real blow when they exited the hardware business and whilst I gamed on other consoles playing Sega games it was never quite the same.
There was always something special about Sega. It wasn’t afraid to challenge the establishment, take risks, and experiment with bold ideas, sometimes to its own detriment. But in doing so, it helped shape the gaming landscape and pioneered many features we now take for granted in games and hardware today.
