@diagnosoid@dronedoommetal been getting into Fela Kuti and this is probably my fav record of his so far, even above Zombie or Expensive Shit, just one excellent jam throughout. originally sung praises for Tarawangsawelas but that's a shit choice to show a random (sick group tho) https://t.co/GxkNEjKIkK
@erasedangelface@Sofishevik Coined genres that last (see “gothic rock” vs “positive punk”) have to have that merit, like rhythm & blues, trip hop, or neo-soul — record collector genres like “deep funk” or “loner folk” are mostly shorthand and artists/labels coin “ethereal” to describe all of Projekt and 4AD
@erasedangelface@Sofishevik Those critics get paid because they do their jobs well and part of that (as well as a term gaining recognition) is being smart enough to coin a genre with actual merit. Plenty of common terms (gothic rock, post-punk, twee pop, punk rock) came from labels used by writers
@erasedangelface@Sofishevik Genres coined by critics paid for their insight are invalid, as opposed to ones coined by random musicians or random listeners which are clearly more coherent
@philwalk666@nightswimming04 Pleasure Ground by Prurient, Halflings self-titled, Sickness Report by Atrax Morgue, Misogynist Lust by Taint are some of my favorite power electronics albums. for Ramleh I prefer their pure power electronics i.e. stuff like their debut or even the tape under Male Rape Group
@darkshineess@aintsosunny@beastfr1end If wetdream were released in the mid-2010s then it would be called bedroom pop. It's pointless to compare arbitrary bands (what do Forcefedglass share with 125 Rue Montmartre but not glass beach??), those bands fit a specific subgenre under emo, of which 5th wave doesn't in sound
@darkshineess@aintsosunny@beastfr1end Nonsequitur question because they belong to different styles and eras of emo, one band pioneering emo and being unrepresentative in that way, the other only being deemed emo in retrospect/for historical reasons and barely being emo — what aspects do they share in the first place?
@darkshineess@aintsosunny@beastfr1end Rites of Spring weren't trying to make emo music because it didn't exist and American Football were only seen as emo overtime, in part because of their influence on 2010s emo, so these are poor examples. The "emo" aspects of wetdream are superficial and broad traits in sound
