Before you get excited about a Mexican EU passport, let’s cover what happened over the last few days. 🇲🇽🇪🇺
On 16 September, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed opening the door to Canada becoming the EU’s first “associate member.” That was a real proposal. The details of what this status would mean still need to be defined. Canada hasn’t joined the EU.
On 17 September, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the idea in the European Parliament. He outlined closer cooperation on trade, defence and technology, alongside opportunities for young people to live, work and study across the Atlantic. Those were ambitions for a partnership they would develop together.
Then Mexico entered the conversation.
That same day, Austrian economist and activist Günther Fehlinger-Jahn posted on X: “I want Mexico in EU now.” His personal suggestion gave us the premise for this comic. An official invitation to Mexico would require considerably more paperwork than a post on X.
And underneath the joke sits a discussion worth having: what would Mexicans actually want out of a much closer relationship with Europe? Easier access to jobs and universities? Better conditions for Mexican businesses selling there? What would Europe ask in return?
We cover the relationship between Mexico, Germany and Europe every week at Das Mexiko Dossier. Sometimes that means explaining trade agreements. Sometimes it means finding out who volunteered Mexico to join the EU while it was away from its desk.
Follow Das Mexiko Dossier for the serious stories and the occasional diplomatic comedy.
Spain’s empire ended. Its cross became a Bolivian regional flag.
Chuquisaca’s Cross of Burgundy shows how communities can give inherited symbols meanings that outlast the governments that carried them.
