I have a Ph.d. so I know everything and I've read everything, and the truth is that Detective Lennie Briscoe is the greatest character in all of world literature.
@For_Film_Fans I don't know... I "think" it's a good movie. It has a good movie's elements, and certainly a good movie's cast and crew. But something about it (and James Elroy's works generally) that's off-putting. I knooow it's supposed to be obnoxious. It's certainly succeeded with that.
The new adaptation of Lord of the Flies on Netflix is so-so, but for people living through the era of MAGA, it's difficult. "KILL BEAST." "LOCK HER UP."
( Reviews aside, always great to see Rory Kinnear.)
@AntigoneJournal Wow. Just wow. I would want to be your best friend. I always dreamed of owning PW, and also trying to collect all the Teubner critical editions. Plus just for fun, all the old Migne editions, including the Syriac ones.
This is such a FUN account to follow.
Woe to those who manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military, economic, and political gain, dragging that which is sacred into darkness and filth. #ApostolicJourney#Cameroon https://t.co/bKteFZ3iWE
@AntigoneJournal Like like like like, ultimate like, like on steroids! The Classical Tradition, Poets in a Landscape, The Art of Teaching, The Immortal Profession were my bibles as a newly minted high school Latin teacher a LONG time ago. Thanks for sharing this.
Today is a good day.
@BigBrainPhiloso Friedrich Katz, The Life and Times of Pancho Villa. It is magisterial history by one of the field's finest practitioners. It is History done right. Even if the subject matter doesn't interest you, read it for its methodology and historical logic. The prose is quite accessible.
@Roma_aeterna923 A teacher once advised me to learn a language where significant scholarship exists, but is lesser-known by the community of scholars, e.g., Russian, Turkic, Polish, Czech. He said it would make me more marketable.
@camin I can relate. I got a master's degree in Classics but didn't pursue it further because I just couldn't get the hang of Latin and Greek. I couldn't sight-read without looking up half the words. I found my calling elsewhere, happily, but I continue to cherish all things ancient.
@dominbydigdug Not just any German, but 19th century Teutonic Wissenschafter German! I was once assigned to do a book report on Mommsen's Römische Staatswesen and... well, I lived through it, but... yknow.
@SketchesbyBoze How does anyone feel about Norman Cantor's Inventing the Middle Ages? I really liked it, but one of the reviewers called it the worst book ever written about medieval Europe. 🤷♂️
