No More Business as Usual: Why Attend the 2026 AHA Business Meeting?
Friends, this is an urgent request for action. Please attend the AHA Business Meeting in Chicago on Saturday, January 10, 2026, 5:15–6:30 p.m. at the Chicago Hilton, Continental ABC. 🧵🧵
"Translators (and interpreters) are the mediators—middlemen—who work the line between colonizer and colonized, occupier and occupied. They work along the frontier, wherever that is."

Such an incredible teaching and movement resource, especially now. Rich with insights on histories of the Arab world, including (and so rarely done, the Gulf), and political thought within and about movements and revolutions. Abed Takriti is a remarkable scholar and narrator.
The apartment where Muin Bseiso and Mahmoud Darwish wrote their joint poem "Letter to an Israeli Soldier" during the 1982 siege of Beirut, was bombed yesterday by the Israelis. Our siege is long.
So I guess to the @AHAhistorians, Professor Al-Masri, a historian of gender and women, and an oral historian, is not worthy of defense? https://t.co/dTz9FtOcyN
"What is unfolding in Gaza is the deliberate outcome of political decisions, military strategies, and a long-standing system of domination. Treating it primarily as a humanitarian crisis is not only inaccurate, but a form of erasure..."
#Israel’s assault on Birzeit University in occupied West Bank isn’t isolated violence but part of a systematic policy - UN experts: "The country’s collective punishment measures seek to destroy the education sector under decades-old military occupation."

This is the scholasticide, the @AHAhistorians recognized that its executive coincil vetoed. A betrayal of the archive they study and to the world they live in.

“Universities are targeted precisely because they sustain Palestinian social and national life... From the obliteration of every university in Gaza to the daily strangulation of academic life in the West Bank, this is an assault on a people’s past, present, and future”
“The space at AHA, and the extraordinary capacity building that it has allowed for, and the conversations that have brought so many of us together — we’re not going to rescind that space.” @meznaqato 🔥
When members of the American Historical Association gathered for their annual conference, the majority voted in favor of a resolution denouncing the scholasticide in Gaza and one on attacks on education in the U.S. The association’s leadership vetoed both. https://t.co/6xX7AE32B1
“The people in the executive council are going along defending the status quo when it is indefensible. So, what do we do? We educate. We organize. We demonstrate, we demonstrate some more. We have to keep fighting.” Ellen Schrecker. Read the article @truthout on @AHAhistorians

This library was destroyed and burned by the Zionist occupation. They dug a pit and threw the books into it. I searched through these books obsessively to save whatever remained, until I was able to rescue more than 300 books.
Perhaps you have all the means and a calm environment for reading, but despite all the hardships I have faced during this genocide, bombing, destruction, displacement, fear, and hunger. I was able to read all the books shown in the last photo. I even celebrated my birthday, and those books were my cake.
This undemocratic tactic seems like an acknowledgement of organizing successes from the bottom up–and underscores the urgency of fighting now to ensure that resolutions submitted by membership are honored. See you all at the meeting!

The AHA Council’s decision to prevent the business meeting from voting is also designed to prevent the recently elected councillors supported by our coalition to vote in January on sending these resolutions to the membership (us) to vote.
its mission is hampered by lack of a clear, democratic mandate to support educational sector in Gaza “in face of a comprehensive and systematic scholasticide.” Without clear mandate outlined in the Resolution to Oppose Scholasticide, this Committee lacks purpose/ accountability.
