On October 7, 1951, singer-songwriter John Mellencamp was born in Seymour. In 2008, hewas inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As of 2022, he is still producing music and lives in Bloomington, Indiana, proclaiming "I'm not leaving Indiana. I'm going to die here."

On this day in 1818, Abraham Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, died in present-day Spencer County of milk sickness. She was 34 years old and Abraham was just 9. She is buried near the family farm which is now located in @LincolnBoyhood National Memorial.

#OnThisDay in 1853, the first boat to travel the entire length of the Wabash and Erie Canal reached Evansville. This canal connected the Great Lakes with the Ohio River and was over 460 miles long when it was finished, making it the longest canal ever built in North America.

#Onthisday in 1883, Marengo Cave was discovered by two children, Blanche and Orris Hiestand. By October, property owner Samuel Stewart officially opened the cave to the public at a charge of 25 cents. The cave was designated a U.S. National Landmark in 1984. #indianahistory
