Today in 1863, Confederate Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn was killed. However, it was not as a result of a Union bullet, but his reputation as a womanizer. The murderer was the husband of a woman that Van Dorn allegedly had an affair with while serving in Tennessee.

Today in 1865, Jefferson Davis held his final meeting with his cabinet in Washington, Georgia. Together, they voted to officially dissolve the Confederate States of America, putting an end to the secessionist experiment. In subsequent weeks, Davis was captured and imprisoned.
