What was Isayama aiming for with this? He doesn't repeat or develop it later, so it comes across as a deus ex machina. Which makes me wonder: why go so far as to write a scene where it’s needed?
It’s a shame that the most memorable moments between Eren and Levi are the ones where Levi is beating him up, because when you read the manga, you realize he actually cares a lot about him, he is one of the people who most acknowledges Eren's humanity

Because simply listing themes doesn't achieve anything, since it’s easy to recontextualize things.
