21st century Islamic fundamentalism pretty much only exists because Sayyid Qutb’s ideas spread like wildfire to parts of the Muslim world that were otherwise heavily secularized in the pan-Arabist model after his death in the late 1970s; half of MENA had laws that heavily *discouraged* veiling in public life. I have no words for just how much Qutbism is responsible for making the post-1970s world Awful and Bad.
