Myanmar viewers question costumes in Thai series ‘Scarlet Heart Thailand’
The upcoming Thai historical fantasy series Scarlet Heart Thailand has sparked online debate after some Myanmar viewers said costumes and accessories featured in its teaser resemble those worn at the Myanmar royal court, particularly during the Konbaung dynasty.
Produced by GMMTV, the series stars Win Metawin, Tu Tontawan, Nanon Korapat, Tay Tawan, Fourth Nattawat, Phuwin Tangsakyuen, Perth Tanapon and Force Jiratchapong.
Adapted from the popular Chinese novel Bu Bu Jing Xin, the Thai version follows a modern woman who travels back in time and finds herself in the body of Fong Nuan, a woman from the fictional city of Wang Nam Lin. She becomes entangled in a struggle for power among seven princes, alongside a story of love and fate. Some Myanmar viewers have called on the production team to explain the historical and cultural references behind the costumes and accessories. An online petition campaign was launched on 20 October, urging the company to verify its historical research, clarify the sources of its designs and provide appropriate cultural credit.
The claims and demands have so far come from some viewers, and further clarification and historical evidence from the production team are awaited.

I’ve carefully examined the images you shared, and I want to clarify one thing: this is not about denying Lanna’s history, culture, or traditional clothing. The real question is whether the costumes in Scarlet Heart Thailand are historically accurate for the period portrayed and what evidence supports their designs.
The images you presented include historical murals, modern costume reconstructions, and contemporary ethnic clothing. While these references may demonstrate aspects of Lanna dress traditions, they do not automatically establish the historical accuracy of the costumes used in the series.
Let’s examine the costumes themselves.
The layered necklaces, large pendants, chest ornaments, elaborate headdresses, earrings, shawls, chest coverings, waist arrangements, and patterned fabrics raise questions about their historical basis. The issue is not whether Lanna people wore jewelry or traditional clothing, but whether these specific designs, combinations, and wearing styles correspond to the period represented.
Elaborate jewelry and layered necklaces were also part of Myanmar’s royal dress traditions during the Konbaung period. This does not prove that the series’ jewelry originated in Myanmar, just as presenting Lanna jewelry does not prove that these designs are exclusively Lanna. Historical origins must be established through evidence, not assumptions.
The same standard applies to clothing. A shawl draped over a shoulder, a particular chest covering, or a patterned lower garment cannot establish cultural origin or historical accuracy alone. We must examine construction, arrangement, materials, and decorative details against reliable sources from the relevant period.
The sources must also be examined critically. Historical murals, modern reconstructions, and clothing worn by ethnic communities today are different types of references, each with its own historical context and evidentiary value. Without identifying their dates, origins, and relevance to the period depicted, these images cannot conclusively establish the costumes’ historical accuracy.
I do not deny the historical and cultural connections between Lanna and Myanmar. These connections may have involved cultural exchange and mutual influence. However, shared history does not determine the origin of a particular design or eliminate the need for evidence.
We are not asking anyone to erase Lanna culture or favor one culture over another. We are asking for Myanmar’s cultural heritage to receive equal consideration and respect. Historical productions reaching international audiences have a responsibility to research and represent cultural traditions carefully. Calling a production fictional does not exempt its historical and cultural references from legitimate scrutiny.
Please address these specific questions:
1. What original historical sources informed the costume designs in Scarlet Heart Thailand?
2. What are the dates, origins, and historical contexts of the murals and costume images you presented?
3. How do these references correspond to the exact period represented in the series?
4. What evidence supports the specific jewelry, headdresses, garment arrangements, and textile patterns shown on screen?
Repeating that Lanna had its own traditional clothing does not answer these questions. That was never the point in dispute.
Lanna’s distinct cultural identity and the historical accuracy of the series’ costumes are two separate issues. One does not automatically prove the other. If these costumes are historically accurate, the supporting evidence should be identifiable and open to examination.
Respecting cultural heritage means more than defending one interpretation of history. It means supporting historical claims with credible evidence and addressing legitimate questions directly.

The entertainment industry is one of the most powerful platforms for promoting a country's culture, history, and identity worldwide. Films and television series can shape international audiences' understanding of a nation's heritage. Therefore, historical research and cultural responsibility are essential.
GMMTV, we have serious questions regarding the costumes and cultural elements featured in the #ScarletHeartTH trailer.
Myanmar viewers have pointed out similarities between certain costumes and Myanmar royal court attire, particularly styles associated with the Konbaung and Yadanabon periods. These concerns go beyond visual resemblance. Traditional clothing carries historical significance, craftsmanship, and cultural identity.
If these costumes were inspired by Myanmar's traditional attire, why has their cultural origin not been clearly acknowledged? If they are based on historical Lanna clothing or another tradition, what historical evidence supports that interpretation? What references were used, and were qualified historians or cultural experts consulted?
Concerns have also been raised about cultural performances in the trailer, including perceived similarities to Myanmar's Rakhine traditional oil-lamp dance. These traditions deserve careful research and respectful representation, not dismissal without explanation.
Lanna and Myanmar each have distinct cultural histories. Recognizing one heritage should never mean overlooking another. Cultural elements should be researched and represented within their proper historical context.
GMMTV's productions reach international audiences, meaning the images you release can influence how millions of people understand other cultures. If cultural origins are inaccurately represented or left unexplained, misunderstandings can spread far beyond the screen.
We have only seen a portion of the series through the trailer. If these concerns have emerged from limited footage, what will the complete series reveal? Will the production provide historical context and clarify the origins of the disputed elements?
Cultural responsibility begins when promotional materials are released, not only when a series airs.
We respect creative freedom and understand that historical fantasy allows artistic interpretation. However, creative freedom does not remove the responsibility to research and acknowledge cultural influences appropriately. We are not opposing cultural exchange; we are asking for transparency and accountability.
We therefore ask GMMTV and the Scarlet Heart Thailand production team:
1. What historical and cultural references informed the costume designs?
2. Were the similarities to Myanmar royal court attire identified and reviewed?
3. What research was conducted into the cultural performances and elements questioned by viewers, including those associated with Rakhine traditions?
4. Were qualified historians or cultural experts consulted?
5. Will GMMTV publicly clarify the origins of these elements and acknowledge Myanmar heritage where appropriate?
6. If inaccurate or misleading representation is identified, what steps will be taken to address it in the series and promotional materials?
@GMMTV , if you aim to create a historical fantasy for international audiences, please give cultural research the same importance as costumes, cinematography, and promotion.
Myanmar's cultural heritage deserves respect, transparency, and proper recognition. It is more than a visual aesthetic; it carries history, identity, craftsmanship, and the legacy of generations who have preserved it.
We urge GMMTV to take these concerns seriously and issue an official response before the series is released and further misunderstandings arise.

Lanna has its own rich cultural heritage. The use of Myanmar’s Konbaung-era royal court attire in a Lanna-based series raises important questions about cultural accuracy and representation. @GMMTV, we demand an official explanation and proper acknowledgment of the attire’s cultural origins.

GMMTV’s actions make it seem as though Myanmar’s culture is too insignificant to deserve proper credit or respect. Our country may be smaller in the eyes of some people, but that does not make our history, traditions, or cultural heritage any less valuable.
Taking elements of Myanmar’s traditional culture without properly acknowledging their origins is deeply disrespectful. It feels as though pieces of our identity are being taken one by one, as if our cultural heritage does not matter simply because we are a smaller country.
Our culture is not yours to take without recognition. Our heritage is not yours to use without respect.
Myanmar people have supported and appreciated GMMTV, but that support does not mean we should remain silent when our cultural heritage is not properly acknowledged. We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for basic respect, proper research, and clear credit where it is due.
GMMTV, please stop treating Myanmar’s cultural heritage as something that can be overlooked. Acknowledge its origins, respect our identity, and take responsibility. Myanmar deserves recognition, not silence.
