Protesters in support of #Palestine walking through McGill Oct. 7. They gathered in the middle of campus, releasing smoke and burning a flag. #protest#October7th
The Montreal police have #Concordia's Hall building completely surrounded. There are police on horseback outside the entrance.
A couple hundred pro-Palestine protesters are outside the building.
Violence, no matter the target or justification, is never the answer. The shooting of Charlie Kirk is not only a tragedy for one man—it is a wound to the soul of our nation. It may silence a voice, but it cannot change a heart or heal a nation.
While I strongly disagree with Charlie Kirk on most issues, especially his comments about my father, we all agree that political violence is inexcusable. Disagreements must be addressed through civil conversations and free, fair elections.
We must reject hatred and division and remember the sacred dignity in every person. This moment calls us to a higher way—beyond left and right, beyond anger and suspicion—toward peace, reconciliation, and shared humanity.
We are praying for his full recovery. May this tragedy lead us not into deeper division, but toward the work of healing and unity that our nation so urgently needs.
Charlie Kirk called me a ‘lunatic’ and a ‘prostitute’ and demanded I be deported.
Nothing, *nothing*, justifies killing him, or robbing his kids of their dad.
We don’t know the identity or motive of the shooter but murder can *never* be the response to political disagreements.
In the last few years we've seen:
- The plot to kidnap Gretchen Whitmer
- The Storming of the Capitol and pipe bombs left at the RNC and DNC
- The break-in to kidnap Nancy Pelosi and the brutal on Paul Pelosi
- Multiple assassination attempts against Trump
- The assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shooting of on State Senator John Hoffman and his wife
- Luigi Mangione's assassination of Brian Thompson
- The assassination of Charlie Kirk
Political violence is contagious. It is spreading. It is not confined to one side or belief system. It should terrify us all.
The foundation of a free society is the ability to participate in it without fear of violence. Political violence is always an attack against us all. You have to be so blind not to see that.

Like a provincial government party hosting an event that encourages & celebrates the harassment & defamation of academics, physicians, & public health officials?
Sigh.
NEW - Ontario is using more power today than it has on any other day in the last 10 years, Minister Lecce tells me. However he says there’s no risk of blackouts or brownouts. The province is importing an unspecified amount of electricity from other jurisdictions to meet demand.
The CAJ was extremely disappointed to learn nearly three dozen unionized journalists at Global News bureaus across the country were laid off this week. Among them is veteran news anchor @FarahNasser. We stand in solidarity with them.
