@gapingmaws@RavenLynClemens I think why Crumb works is he portrayed himself as completely and utterly pathetic, below even contempt. He crosses from a disgusting masturbatory fascination to the sort of obsessed worship that ancient queens only knew, except for every woman alive.
@SpookyCountry@fffffff555555@viperwave No one orders you to bomb the civilians though- the entire Dubai incursion is Walker undergoing an act of insubordination to push further into Dubai, his original mission was just to investigate and leave. The game reads much more clearly as a critique of 2006-2010 FPS games.
@Alexicologism@PlagueofJ@broadenallknee@viperwave SOTL is so good at letting the player make choices through the in game mechanics- like firing above the crowd vs firing into it. Letting us choose to try and not fight makes the "you wanted this" criticism much more salient because then then player actually did want it.
@Alexicologism@PlagueofJ@broadenallknee@viperwave I'd argue the opposite. Imagine if the first encounter ONLY started when you fired your gun. If you held your fire then eventually everyone calmed down and you see relief helicopters flying in and you get a secret ending. Not amazingly in depth, but it becomes an actual choice.
@arcadedoublea@HKG36@viperwave Then maybe they should've stopped with the fourth wall breaks and not insinuate that YOU, THE PLAYER is at fault for all that's happening. In a linear game with no choices.
"Just don't play the game" it cost 60 bucks on release.
@viperwave One of my big criticisms of Spec Ops: The Line is that there isn't really an option to not do bad stuff - you just have to, and the game scolds you. TloU2 is even worse in that regard - you just have to do brutal revenge or you don't get to experience the game. And uhh... why?
@WinslowDumaine@viperwave Like, it wants me to feel bad with all the tool tips, 4th wall breaks, but I don't feel bad because I never had a choice. I feel like the game is undercutting its own emotional beats by dropping something heavy then turning to look at me like I'm the one that coded it in the game
@WinslowDumaine@viperwave Yeah, and its undermined by forcing me to be a bad person then claiming that I wanted to and had fun doing it. I didn't want to burn civilians, but you forced me too Spec Ops, and now you're mad at me? Should I just shut off the game i paid 60$ for to prove I'm not actually evil?
@Drainjesusice@viperwave It directly scolds you. There are loading screen tool tips that say "you wanted this, this is your fault" etc. Walker is barely a character - all criticism is directed at the player through walker as a thin representation.
@fffffff555555@viperwave ? SOTL has tool tips directed at the player pretty clearly scolding us for our mid-2000s FPS milsim bloodlust. It just rings hollow when it forces me to kill civilians then tries to turn around and say I wanted to do that and had fun doing it.
@PlagueofJ@broadenallknee@viperwave Yes, good catch - i did mean earlier than that. If i had my druthers I'd say you should get a surrender option before every major crime - the water, the WP mortar, etc. I'd settle for all the early surrender options being the same too, if they just existed
@ABorlandFan88@CartoonsHateHer @LittleMammith Yeah, I disagree. I don't think there's anything that's a bad conversation topic. What do you even want out of a relationship? Nothing seems to make you happy or fulfill you in anyway, what makes you think a relationship would be different?
@ABorlandFan88@CartoonsHateHer @LittleMammith I gotta be honest, the more we talk it sounds like the problem is that you're a hostile, negative guy. Maybe you weren't always that way, but you just ooze dissatisfaction and depression. Maybe you need to sanitize your online circles or get outside more- you gotta do something
@broadenallknee@viperwave No - i like what it's going for, and in some regards I even like that it wants to direct it's criticism at the player. Those COD games - LOVE war crimes. But it feels slightly dishonest because there's never a chance to surrender. A surrender ending ties the whole thing together
@ABorlandFan88@CartoonsHateHer @LittleMammith Do you have an interesting job? Or any hobbies? Do you do anything with your time other than scroll on your phone?
@ABorlandFan88@CartoonsHateHer @LittleMammith Well, becoming good at simple small talk helps you become good at big talk, put simply. You get practice in relating to people, and you learn how to make potentially boring stories interesting (I saw a building vs I was on vacation and saw a beautiful villa in Italy)
@ABorlandFan88@CartoonsHateHer @LittleMammith Humor, jokes, all that stuff is subjective. That you don't think men and women can share a sense of humor is pretty telling too. Girls are just people! Dating is just an advanced form of making new friends.
@ABorlandFan88@CartoonsHateHer @LittleMammith You keep saying that nothing has ever happened to you, you have no knteresting stories - why not? Did you go to college? Did you have a group of friends you hung out with in high-school? Do you go on trips, try new things, and meet new people?
